How can pastors equip the church to faithfully navigate a non-Christian society?
In today's world, the role of pastors and elders extends beyond traditional preaching; it involves guiding the congregation to live as faithful believers amidst a culture that often contradicts Christian values. Robert Bosley emphasizes the importance of clear communication from church leaders, focusing on both the gospel and God's law. This approach not only shows the path to salvation but also helps believers understand how to lead lives that honor God. Pastors must be diligent in their teachings, providing clarity and support as believers face challenges from the surrounding culture.
Moreover, pastoral counseling plays a crucial role, whether it happens one-on-one or from the pulpit. Church leaders are called to encourage their congregations to prioritize Christ, emphasizing that the ultimate goal is to glorify God in all aspects of life. In a world where differing views might lead to social exclusion, believers are reminded that living differently from their neighbors is not only acceptable but commendable. The focus remains on honoring God rather than conforming to societal pressures or seeking approval from non-believers.
Romans 12:2 (NKJV): "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
The pastors and elders of the churches need to be very clear that they are calling the people to do something that's going to cause them to swim against the stream of the culture, to live as faithful believers in a non-Christian society, it's no longer something that can be assumed. They have to be very clear in proclaiming the gospel and proclaiming the law of God, not just how to be saved, but how to live in a way that honors and pleases God. It's no longer, and hasn't been, safe to assume these things. They have to be very clear in instructing their people. And also being there to help and to navigate these issues.
So, counseling, not just one-on-one counseling, but even counseling from the pulpit and their exhortations. Like, this is how you obey these commands. And just really encouraging the people to set their focus on Christ. That their number one goal in all of life is to honor and glorify God. They cannot spend their days asking, am I going to be canceled for whatever strange view I have or am I going to be kicked out of my friend's circle because I want to homeschool or whatever other aspect of Christian living that they want to hold onto.
The shepherds have to actually lead the flock to know that you are going to live in a very different way compared to your neighbors. And that's okay. That's good because your goal is to honor God, not satisfy and please your unbelieving friends and family.
