What does it mean that Christ is the “only begotten” of the Father?

Pooyan Mershahi explains in this video that there are many passages referring to Jesus Christ as being the only begotten of the Father. The Greek word for the phrase “only begotten” is a term relating to Christ. It is a reference to Christ being the same essence and nature of the Father.

The phrase "only begotten" involves derivation by birth. It is a theological concept that refers to the essence and nature of Christ being the same as God the Father. It is a very deliberate language to give us a specific truth concerning the nature of the Son of god and His relationship to the Trinity.

1 John 4:9 (NKJV) – “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.”

Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of the Father By Christ being the only begotten Son of God, there are many passages in the Word of God referring to Jesus Christ as the only begotten of the Father. For example, in John's Gospel chapter 1 and verse 18 it says, No man hath seen God at any time, but the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him. Or that very well-known passage John 3 16, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The Greek term for that phrase, the only begotten, is the word monoganes, which is a compound word meaning only begotten. The term only begotten is a term used regarding the Lord Jesus Christ.

It is a compound word that is translated rightly and faithfully the only begotten. It is a theological term that the Apostle uses in the gospel. It is a reference to Christ being of the same essence and nature as the Father. It gives us the concept of begetting or derivation by birth. It is as a man would bring forth a child that a man would beget a son.

The son who is begotten is of the same nature as the father. So a son of a human being is human in nature. And so it is a theological concept and theological word that is used, rightly translated the only begotten Son, referring to the essence and the nature of Jesus Christ being the very God of very God. The Reformed and Protestant Confessions of Faith, such as the Westminster Confession of Faith and the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith in chapter 2 and paragraph 3 refers to the only begotten son of the Father. It is a phrase adopted by the Reformed and Protestant confessions of faith and catechisms.

For example, the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Baptist Confession of Faith 1689 uses the term the Son is eternally begotten of the Father. Being eternally begotten of the Father means that Jesus Christ is of the very essence and substance as the Father. And Therefore, He is of the same nature. And so the language of the Only Begotten Son is a very deliberate language that is used in the inspired writings of a scripture to give us a very specific truth concerning the nature of the Son of God and his relationship to the Holy Trinity as being one of essence and of nature or substance. And therefore it is essential even in maintaining the doctrine of the Holy Trinity to have Christ as being the only begotten of the Father.

He proceeds from the Father and so it is an accurate translation and usage of the Word and what a wonderful thing it is that Christ is that God manifest in the flesh and who has dwelt among us. You
