What is something that parents can do to strengthen their families?

Dr. Joel Beeke explains in this video that there are a number of things that parents can do that will benefit their families. Family worship needs to be something that regularly occurs within a family. It is the underpinning of all that will be taught in the home and the Bible commands it.

There are essentially four facets of family worship: the reading of Scripture, a time of instruction from the head of the home, prayer, and singing. These four things, when done repeatedly, give parents literally thousands of opportunities to speak to your children about different things in Scripture. You will be talking with your children about what Scripture says on every subject under the sun.

Deuteronomy 6:7-8 (NKJV) - "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes."

Well, as for keeping the Word of God central in the family, there's a number of things that parents can profit a great deal by doing it. It takes discipline. Certainly the central plank of all family life and all child rearing needs to be family worship, that daily time every day because family worship underscores, it's the underpinning of all that will be taught in the home. And so I think family worship is critical, I think the Bible commands it and I think it involves four critical parts. The reading of scripture, 2 Timothy 3.

It involves the instruction from the word of God, diligent instruction from the head of a home supported by his wife, or if there's no man involved, the woman takes, the mother takes the leadership. Deuteronomy 6, it involves the prayer time. Jeremiah says the family doesn't pray together, the fury of God comes down upon that family, and it involves singing. Psalm 118 verse 15. Singing shall be heard in the tents of the righteous.

And so these four things, when done repeatedly, say 365 times 20 years of average child's in the home, it gives you 7, 300 opportunities to speak to your children about different things in the Word of God. If you move from Genesis to revelation, and especially as the children get older, you
