Dr. Joel Beeke explains that one piece of advice that he would give to himself if that were possible is to not panic when a child acts up. Continue to be diligent and persevere in biblical teaching, love, and discipline. Different stages of a child's life might cause more stress than others, but it is important to not lose hope or joy in child training.
Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV) - "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."
What advice would I give to myself if I was back in the 20s? Well, one thing I would certainly tell myself that I did not do very well on is don't panic when a child gets into a certain stage of life and we had one child for example when that child was about five years old the child had such a vivid imagination that the child just made up stories and insisted they were true. And I thought, oh no, we're raising the pathological liar. I mean, this child's gonna be in jail someday. I mean, you know how it goes.
Your mind sees the worst. But with patient teaching and the importance of telling the truth always, and a little bit of physical remuneration, this whole stretch lasted maybe six months and We experienced that all of our children are now happily married God-fearing children to God-fearing spouses. We're so grateful it's all God's grace, but All of those stages that we went through with children, it all comes out okay. If you just persevere in using biblical principles and don't panic. I wish someone had told me that early on.
I think I would have had more joy in child rearing than I did.
