Mike Davenport explains in this video that Scripture makes it clear that discipline is healthy and biblical. In fact, God chastens all of His children and does not spare us from it. If God does not discipline us, it is because we are not sons of His. Discipline, though it may not be sweet to the recipient, is ultimately an act of love and kindness.

Hebrews 12:11 (NKJV) - "Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."

The Bible is very clear in the use of the rod, and it is a healthy thing for our child to receive the rod at the right times to be used along with our teaching, along with our instruction, along with our admonitions verbally. Sometimes it's necessary to use the rod. We read in Hebrews 12 that our God chastens all of His children. God does not spare us from the rod, but when the rod has done what God intends, it brings the peaceable fruit of righteousness that we might be trained by it. And God tells us there by the writer to the Hebrews that if God does not discipline us, if He does not chasten us, it is because we are not sons.

We are not His. For every son that God receives, That Son receives discipline.
