Dr. Carlton McLeod explains in this video that fathers are to orient life around God in their household and ensure that children are exposed to the things of God within the home and at church. They are to be personally involved in teaching, praying, and talking about God with their children. It involves discipleship and walking hand-in-hand with your children. It involves sharing your passion and love for God with your children. It is a weighty responsibility but a glorious one.

Ephesians 6:4 (NKJV) - "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."

Ephesians 6, 4, kind of the seminal New Testament passage, the recapitulation of Deuteronomy 6, essentially in the New Testament, that fathers should raise up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. It sets forth a magnificent responsibility that we are to orient life around God in the household, Ensure that our children are exposed to the things of God at church and at home, to saturate our home lives with the Word of God and the songs of Zion, and to be personally involved in teaching our children, praying with our children, communicating our hearts and our own love for God with our children. I think about that verse and it sounds so intimate to me. Yes, it sets forth a precept, but it's intimate. It's not wooden.

It's not just a teacher in a classroom. This is discipleship. This is walking hand in hand with your sons and your daughters as they observe your love for God, they observe your love for Christ and when you open up His Word they see your own passion and enthusiasm for the things of God to bring up children in his nurture and his admonition is much, much more than just teaching them facts, but it's communicating something from our hearts to them. And so that's what it means to me. Every time I read it, I realize I'm failing, but I'm also recognizing that the command remains and I have to keep by His grace trying and my prayer is that my children will exceed me in their passion for Him as I attempt to raise them up in this field.
