Phil George explains in this video that Ephesians 6 states that children are to obey their parents. And how does that text apply to us as parents? If our children are called to obey, parents ought to be able to instruct their children. They need to be able to instruct their children why things are the way they are according to Scripture.
Isaiah 1:19 (NKJV) - "If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land."
Ephesians chapter 6 beginning in verse 1 there Paul says, Children, obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. Honor your father and your mother. This is the first commandment with a promise that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land." When we read that text, our first thought, and rightfully so, is how does this apply to children? But really where we want to go today is how does that text apply to us as parents in relation to that command to our children. If we go to the letter to the Colossian church, we get a little more clarity there, where Paul says, Children, obey your parents in everything.
And so for us as parents, what we have to recognize is that If our children are called to obey us in everything, then we're called to be able to instruct them in everything. That means we need to be able to open up the Word of God and be able to explain to them from why the frog does what he does to Why in society today we're dealing with social justice issues and everything in between. We need to be able to open up God's Word and explain to them just all the things that are going on in the world around them so that they might be able to obey us in everything.
