Joel Beeke explains in this video that it is important to understand that parents must not neglect teaching their children spiritual matters. Children need to be consistently taught in both the family and in the church that God is central. The church and the family is a team that works together.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (NKJV) - "And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching."

What does the Church need to understand? We can just focus on secular subjects. And the church must not say, well, since we're doing the catechizing, parents don't need to teach their children religion and Christianity at home. Rather, children need in every sphere, whether homeschooled or sent to a Christian school at home in their education and at church they need a consistent kind of upbringing in which the authority holder is speaking with them lovingly about all the various facets of the Bible and true religion, true Christianity. So, children know that also in the very real area of the home, my home, my family, down to earth where the rubber hits the road, God is central.

They need God central everywhere. And so really the church and the family are a team working together. But the premier responsibility of course rests with the Father in the home to train and bring up his children to nurture and fear the admonition of the Lord.
