Carlton McLeod explains in this video that the commandment to obey one's parents is a commandment with a promise. One of the things that he and his wife try to teach their children is their obedience. A household has to have order. A sweet household is the product of obedience. There is much discord and strife when children don't obey their parents.

Ephesians 6:1-3 (NKJV) - "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother,' which is the first commandment with promise: 'that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.'"

Children are commanded to obey their parents and we see this in the Old Testament. We see this obviously here in Ephesians 6 verses 1 through 3 in the New Testament. And one of the things that I try to teach my children is that this is a commandment with a promise, the first great one with a promise that things would go well, that you'd live long in the land. And so one of the things that we try to teach our parents at our church, we certainly try to teach our own children, is the power of a child's obedience and how it just paves the way for so many beautiful things in the household. The household has to have order.

In fact, every jurisdiction that God creates created has a head and has order. And one of the things that God has given us for a sweet household is the command for children to obey their parents, to honor their parents. And what's missing in so many families is just basic honor and this thing we call first-time obedience, which is to say when we give commands to our children, they jump with enthusiasm at that command to obey it. Now, of course, when I teach that to my church, everyone laughs because no one does that. They're going, what fantasy world are you living in?

But it's also one of the reasons why our home lives, particularly our parental lives, are so difficult at times, and there's so much discord and strife. Can you imagine what would happen if a father and mother simply said, hey Susie, Johnny, do this? And they go, yes, father, certainly, father. And that's kind of what we're looking for. In this process, children are learning how to obey God They're learning the right way to approach approach their father in heaven when he gives them a command then Quickly and enthusiastically and lovingly they they jump to obey Go big.
