Sam Waldron explains in this video that a young person will never understand the faith and lifestyle of his parents until he is convicted of his sin and is transformed by the work of God.

Children may grow up in a Christian home and think that because they grow up in a good home and attend a good church that somehow, they're entitled to eternity in Heaven. However, we must remember to teach them that they are not saved by works. They need the Gospel.

Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV) - "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."

A young person will never understand the lifestyle of his parents until he really understands his own sin, experiences conviction for sin, and experiences his need of Christ and of Christ as the only savior from sin. And till he experiences the transformation of life that that faith will work in him, a young person, a child is never going to understand his parents' faith and lifestyle. And so, yeah, a lot of children grow up in Christian homes. They aren't really outwardly rebellious in any kind of grievous way, but they just haven't been paying attention. They've always kind of thought they get in on their parents' shoestrings or their parents' apron strings, or somehow they get in because of their parents to the church and to the salvation that they hear about.

But they really haven't been paying attention enough to know that they themselves need to experience the work of grace. And so what they need is the gospel. Maybe not the gospel coming by way of strong rebuke, but at least the gospel coming by way of saying, you know, we are not saved by works done in righteousness, even the works done in righteousness of children raised in a Christian home. We have to be saved by experiencing deeply and keenly our own sin, and we have to be saved by experiencing deeply and in a life-giving way the promise of life in Christ Jesus and the forgiveness of sins in Him.
