Jeff Pollard explains in this video that family shepherds have the responsibility of guiding the home spiritually. It is an essential task. A husband is the God-appointed head of his home. Accordingly, such a man ought to be a man of prayer and study the Word.

As the father grows in spiritual maturity, the children grow as well. A father shouldn't expect to be perfect -- rather, it is important to understand the needs of your family, growing yourself, and then feeding those who God has placed in your care.

We've discussed something about family shepherds and how their role is to oversee the family, especially guiding the home spiritually. This is essential. As I think most of us understand a husband, a father is the God appointed covenant head of his home. He doesn't have to go to seminary. He doesn't have to have a theological degree.

That is exactly why, first of all, he needs to have a spiritual life of his own. He needs to be a man of prayer. He needs to be a man who is studying the word and Good theology Secondly he needs to consider the ages of those in his family and look for age appropriate Literature and and Bible study for their home, for His home. It's essential, and a lot of men are scared to death of this, it's essential for them to grasp that the very reason for catechisms and confessions was so that men who are out all day supporting their families can come home in the evenings and read to them and teach them directly from these pre-made theological systems. They're vital.

A man can establish his home simply by faithfully age appropriately catechizing his children. Now when He does that and when they ask Him questions, in time He'll have to go to others to get answers for them. But that's part of the process. That's what helps them to grow. As the father grows, the children grow.

As husband and wife grow together and read things together. They grow. It's not about being perfect overnight and sitting down and teaching the children a 10-week course on justification by faith alone, again, when they're six. It's understanding the needs of your family, growing yourself, and then feeding these precious little ones and your dear wife. You
