How are the church and the family to work together?

Paul Thompson explains in this video that the authority and jurisdiction of the church and family are not to be opposed to each other but to work in harmony.

For example, we can see the different jurisdiction that each county, city, and state has. Parents have this enormous responsibility to raise their children. The church's role in jurisdiction does not encompass the same responsibility. A father's primary role is to teach his children about the things of God. The church should be a voice that is biblically authoritative and encourages the jurisdiction of a father and mother to disciple their children.

Acts 20:28 (NKJV) - "Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood."

The authority and the blessedness of church and family, they're not pitted to be opposed to one another. They're designed by God to work in harmony with each other. It's perhaps best understood in an illustration perhaps like in our judicial systems or counties, cities, states. There's jurisdictions. A county sheriff has a large jurisdiction.

A city policeman or chief of police has a smaller sphere of influence. I think that if families can understand the jurisdiction in which God has designed for His glory, that parents have this enormous responsibility. And their responsibility of the child encompasses all of their lives. In the pastor's role, the church's role, this jurisdiction is similar, but it's not the same. It doesn't encompass the same responsibility.

So for a parent to understand, especially for a father, a godly man, to understand that his primary role with this child is to teach them the things of God. It's not different than the church's responsibility, but it's different in the way it's done. It's different in responsibility. The church really should be of this voice that is biblically authoritative from this position and then essentially giving or encouraging the jurisdiction of the father and the mother as the primary teacher of the children of the things of God and that the father and the mother should not shirk that responsibility.
