What can we learn from reading the Proverbs?

We see the infinite wisdom of God as a father expresses the outworking of God's law and applies it to the daily activities of his children. What we have in Proverbs is a remarkable catalogue for family worship. Fathers ought to want to read the wisdom of God. This growing of wisdom begins with faith in Christ and learning how to walk according to His Word.

Ephesians 5:15-17 (NKJV) - "See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is."

Now when we turn to the book of Proverbs, we actually see something of the nature of family worship worked out before us. What do we see? Especially in the first nine chapters. We have a father who's sitting with his children and he's instructing them in the things of God. This is vital because the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.

And the book of Proverbs is a book of wisdom. And what we find page after page, chapter after chapter, is the infinite wisdom of God in small chunks as a father expresses the outworking of God's law and applies the Word of God to daily activities of his children. So what we have is a remarkable catalogue for family worship. For any father who is struggling with what do I read to my children next, sit down, take the book of Proverbs, and say, here's the Father instructing his children.
