Should elders of a church be involved with how fathers raise their own individual families?
Dr. Carlton McLeod explains in this video that as an elder in the local church, he has a responsibility to train father. Correspondingly, fathers have a responsibility to train their children.
He understands that each father must make decisions how he should lead his family and that there are boundaries. His responsibility to instruct fathers and a father's duty is to train and lead his own family. Of course, if a father acts in such a way that requires church discipline, that is another matter, but as an elder of his church, he desires to allow fathers to flourish and lead their own families as they see fit.
Ephesians 6:4 (NKJV) - "And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord."
As an elder in the local church, I have responsibility to preach the word and train fathers. And fathers are given, and heads of households are given the responsibility to train their children. And so I'm actually very careful with those boundaries. I might have men in a room alone and I'm a little tough on them because of their responsibilities, but when they make certain decisions concerning how their family is going to go forward, unless those decisions conflict with the word of God in some way, then that man is responsible. And I want to walk with him in those decisions as a loving brother and as a shepherd.
So I think the lines are reasonably delineated when it comes to declaring the Word of God as an elder you declare it and you as best you can you lovingly hold people accountable. When families make certain decisions if They conflict with the word of God. You walk alongside them and say, hey, this is what scripture says. If it's a decision so heinous that it requires church discipline, then the elders make that decision. If it's just more of a, well, we've decided that we're going to such and such, You love them and you bless them and you try not to treat them any different or you know put them over in the corner unless it merits again discipline.
But I'm very careful with those boundaries because here's here's what I've seen in our community at times. Sometimes we train fathers to teach their families, but then we still wanna teach their families, right? We still wanna be involved in everything and kind of run the household. And that's out of order. That's out of order.
You have to release those heads of households to go and flourish and just walk with them.
