Welcome to Iwo Jima, the battlefield of my father's youth. My name is Scott Brown and what follows are Bible lessons for manhood from the battle for Ewo. These lessons connect biblical principles of manhood with the experiences of our boys on Iwo Jima for the purpose of training the boys of the next generation. Papa, before we get into the Bible Lessons for Manhood, can we back up and get the big picture of what is this book all about? This is an audio vignette from a larger book entitled Bible Lessons for Manhood from the Battlefield of My Father's Youth.

Now this book is a tool for dads for the discipleship of their sons and in it you'll find biblical lessons of manhood that come out of the World War II battle for Iwo Jima. And it's about fighter planes and amphibious assaults and cave warfare, flame throwers, explosions, all kinds of things like that. But it's a book about discipling boys to be truly great boys and someday men. And it's really directed to fathers to give them a tool to help them to disciple their sons in some of the premier qualities of manhood. It uses a modern example, the example of my father and some other men that I've met who were actually at the battle for Iwo Jima.

And I use these to explain what God has already said in Scripture. Now I've thought about the battle for Iwo Jima for a long time, and at the sixty year anniversary of the battle, I had the privilege of standing on that island at the top of Mount Suribachi with my father and two of my children. And that experience really brought together so many things to me. This was the battlefield of my father's youth. This was where my father flew fighter planes and defended our country and bought me a future.

And I hope that the lessons that he learned there and the ones he communicated to me and how they apply with Scripture will be multiplied for good for many generations, and I hope that it will be a good tool for dads to train their sons. Now something I've got to tell you about this book. This is the kind of book I always wanted, flashlight in hand, sitting inside a tent, reading to my children. In times like those, I always wanted a book that had three qualities. First of all, it had to bring the reader the teaching of scripture.

It had to contain the secrets of life and godliness. There's nothing more practical, encouraging, wonderful, nothing more life changing than scripture, so that it had to have scripture in it. Well, what you'll find is in this book, you'll find scripture all over it. Second, it had to be about real people and real situations in history because I value history way above fantasy and I would rather have a book of history with real people and real things than a fantasy book when I'm reading it to my children in a tent. Third, it had to communicate facts that were interesting, they're exciting, they're fulfilling to ponder.

That's the kind of book I always wanted as a young father to read to my children if we were on a camping trip or something like that. So That's why each chapter in this book has a number of things in it and it follows the same pattern. There are many stories in the book but they all follow the same pattern. First of all, there are scripture citations that summarize a life application And that will just help us to see everything in light of Scripture. Secondly, history.

The chapters begin with real stories, real people, real situations that happened on the island of Iwo Jima, most of whom my father told me about. So you'll hear the phrase, my father told me, several times in this book. There's also life application. Each story ends with some practical correlation to everyday life or an important concept to live by. So I've taken the stories of Iwo Jima and looked to them for illustrations and connections with something more important in life that's related to scripture.

The fourth thing is relationship. I always wanted a book that helped me talk to my children about the stuff that was in it. So at the end of each chapter are questions that you can use to discuss the content of the chapter. And so they are designed just to help you think through the historical details, but more importantly the life applications. Now also, a big bonus in this book are our hymns at the end of each chapter.

I always wanted to sing in the tent. I always wanted to have something compelling and beautiful that we could sing out of our hearts as we would ponder particular principles. Well, at the end of each chapter you'll find a hymn that supports or explains an element of the discipleship principle of the chapter in question. So I hope that this will be not only a fun book for everyone who reads it, but also a really practical, but also a book that will help a boy to be a real man in the midst of a world where there aren't very many real men left.
