How does parenting change as your children grow?

Jason Dohm explains in this video that God has given him and his wife six children. Their parenting of their children has changed as their children have matured. Wise parents are extending the "leash" on their children as they grow.

Parents ought to pray first that God would bring them into HIs Kingdom and then that they would grow into mature individuals. At some point, as your children grow and spiritually mature, you will almost feel as though you are teammates.

Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV) - "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."

So, God has given my wife Janet and I six children and they're now age-ranged. 24 is our oldest down to 12 years old. We don't parent them the same way. As children mature and as children, I earn a reputation for being trustworthy. I think wise parents are extending the leash until the leash all but disappears.

What you're after is to, you're praying that God would bring them into His kingdom by grace. They repent, trust on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. And then the discipleship process begins and they're being conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. What does that mean? That means maturity.

And as they are more mature, you want to entrust them with more responsibility and more freedom until you hit a certain point where really it feels like you're more teammates on the same team playing different roles and different functions on the same team. And there's very little need, authority structure still exists, but there's very little need. You certainly don't have to be heavy-handed to the extent that they've earned a reputation for being trustworthy and responsible.
