What can we learn from the three offices of Christ?

John Snyder explains in this video that Christ is our Prophet, Priest, and King. Christ comes to rule and protect us. He is God. He is also our Lord. In Acts, Peter explains how Christ was exalted to the right hand of the Father. As God, He is co-governor of the universe at the right hand of God. 

We do need all three offices of Christ. We do not understand God apart from the life of Christ. We cannot come and find peace apart from the priestly work of Christ and we wander apart from the rule of Christ. We can't pick parts of Christ that we love and parts that we do not. True faith embraces Christ fully. 

Hebrews 9:11-14 (NKJV) - "But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"

We are a rebellious people by nature. We prefer to rule ourselves, to have it our own way. Christ comes to rule us. He comes also to protect us. He has the right to rule us.

He is God. But he's also earned the right to be our Lord by his labors as our mediator. Peter tells us in the book of Acts that Christ having died was raised from the dead and exalted to the right hand of the Father and was made Lord, that is owner and ruler. So as a man, as the God-man, he becomes the co-governor of the universe at the right hand of the Father. Now when we think about these three offices of Christ, we do need all three.

We don't understand God apart from the words and life of Jesus Christ. We cannot come and find peace with a holy God apart from the priestly work of Christ And we wander confused apart from the rule of Christ. We do need all three offices. And when we think of the three offices, we can't really accomplish any of those. Not only do we need them, we can't love a Christ that doesn't contain all three.

We can't pick parts of Christ that we want. We can't love him in slices. We can't trust him in slices. We can't say I want Christ as a prophet to tell me what I'm supposed to do to help me out of my confusing situations in life, but I don't want him as a king or as a priest, but not one who rules and teaches me. So when we come to Christ faith really is embracing all of Christ, prophet, priest, and king.

What he says, what he's done on my behalf, and how he rules me, his rights. And it's an embracing of that with all of me. My mind understands these things. My heart agrees with them and my will chooses them. You
