What does it mean when Christ says that He is the "Bread of Life?"

Cary Green explains in this video that when Christ says that He is the Bread of Life, He is saying that He is the source of all of our physical needs. This is one of seven “I am” statements in the Gospel of John. He is declaring that He is God. 

Not only do we have a physical need for daily sustenance for bread and water, but we need God Himself. So, when He says that He is the Bread of Life, He is saying that He is the source of all life, both physical and spiritual.

John 6:35 (NKJV) – “And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”

So what does Jesus mean when he said, I am the bread of life? Well let me go ahead and read that verse for us in John 6 35. Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. You comes to me will not hunger and he who believes in me will never thirst. The amazing thing about it is just a day before Jesus had fed 5, 000 people and so with a few loaves and a few fish.

So when he says I am the bread of life, number one, he's saying that I am the source of all your physical needs, just like God is the source of all of our physical needs every single day of our entire lives. But more than that, this is an I am statement and there's seven of them in John. Matter of fact, John is the only gospel writer to mention these at all. And so he's basically also declaring at the same time that he's God. And that not only do we have a physical need for daily sustenance, bread and water, but more than that we need God Himself.

And so when He says, I am the bread of life, He's basically saying, I am the source of all life, both physical and spiritual, and there's no one greater than Christ.
