What is common in every conversion?

John Snyder explains in this video that in every genuine conversion, the person of Christ is at the heart of it. It's not because of the wonderful privileges that the Christian life offers, it is Christ that we come to. We are giving all that we know of ourselves and turning it all to Him.  

He shares how he grew up in a godly home but wasn’t saved until the age of 20. Even though he had entered college to study for the ministry, his heart was far from the things of God. All of his life was about himself until He was saved. 

1 Timothy 3:16 (NKJV) – “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory.”

Every genuine conversion, every time a person is brought from spiritual death to life, every time God opens the eyes and softens the heart and frees the will so that faith and repentance would be exercised for the first time. The person of Jesus Christ is at the heart of it. It's not just the fear of hell, it's not just the attraction of heaven, It's not the wonderful privileges that the Christian life offers, the sense of community, of well-being, a clear conscience. It's a person that we're coming to, not a plan. We're embracing a person, all of that person, and we are in a sense, we are giving all that we know of ourselves as inadequate as that is and we're turning it over to all that we know of him and we're grabbing hold by faith of all that we know of him as small as that knowledge may be, especially at first, but we lay hold of that, and we take all of that to ourselves.

When I was converted, I was 20 years old, I had grown up in a very godly home, but in spite of that, I was very rebellious, and though I agreed intellectually with the claims of Christ and even had entered a college to study for the ministry, my heart was as far from him as possible.
