What are the responsibilities of a pastor and the congregation?

Jeff Pollard explains in this video that pastors and elders are appointed by God to administer His Word to His people. They are shepherds of the church. It is vital for them to preach faithfully and strive to live godly and holy lives. 

The responsibility of the members of the church is to take the Word preached, to be Bereans, and to apply the truths of Scripture to their lives. They must obey Christ and walk according to the Word of God. 

Acts 20:28 (NKJV) – “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”

The only reason that the elders preach is because God has appointed them to administer His word to his flock. They are under shepherds. And the responsibility of the people hearing the Word of Christ is to take the applications that have been set before them to prove all things, to hold fast to that which is good, to the best of their ability, to be Berean and to be sure, as much as they can be, that this is indeed what the Word of God is not only saying, but this is what it means and this is how we're to live in light of that. It's their responsibility at that point to obey Christ, to walk according to the Word of God by the leadership of the elders. That's why it's vital for elders not only to preach faithfully, but to live godly and holy lives.

They are to model what they're preaching. They'll never do it perfectly, beginning right here. But we can do it well by the grace of God. He truly does make us new creations.
