What is a characteristic of false repentance?

David Eddy explains in this video that one characteristic of an individual who shows false repentance is that they inevitably return back to their sin and embrace it. 

One of the more tragic examples of false repentance that he has seen involves young men who pretend that they’re saved in order to pursue a girl that they are interested in within the church. To most people, it appears that they’re eager to learn about the Word of God when in reality, they never were repentant and never desired the things of God. They continued to pursue the desires of their flesh. Ultimately, they rejected what they previously proclaimed as true and turned their back on God and His ways. 

Proverbs 26:11 (NKJV) – “As a dog returns to his own vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.”

To me, I think the classic scripture for that person is the pig that goes back to their wallow. You can dress them up, clean them up, put them at the table with the children. And the moment you turn your back, they're, they've got the pig nature still, therefore they're not part of the family actually. And of all the situations that breaks my heart the most as a pastor, and anytime you see someone that comes in and really tries to appear as a sheep that really is a goat. I don't think anyone with a pastor's heart can not have their heart broken when they realize what's actually going on.

But as far as collateral damage, the worst thing that I see are particularly the young men who find a nice Christian girl and they get saved in order to pursue her. And they come into church, they get involved, they're there Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night, they're anxious to study scripture, to do Bible studies with this young lady. They get married, come back from the honeymoon, and you don't see them again. And it was just, it was the pursuit. And in this case, you know, here you see the difference between the godly repentance and worldly repentance.

It was the pursuit of the fleshly pleasures rather than the pursuit of God. If it had been a pursuit of God, they would still be at church after they'd gotten the wife.
