What is an elder’s role in the reformation of a church?
Jeff Pollard explains in this video that in the church, God has appointed people who have essential roles in seeing reformation take place. Reformation in the church begins with elders. They have no authority in themselves to reform their church. The only authority they have is given to them by Christ through the power of the Spirit according to the Word of God.
It is vital for elders to fill their hearts and minds with God’s truth, to read Scripture faithfully, to prayerfully exegete the passages, to read widely, and be sure that they have carefully understood what the Scriptures mean. Then, they can preach and teach their congregation and make applications that can help to bring about change
1 Peter 5:1-2 (NKJV) – “The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly.”
