Why do people oppose calls to repentance?

Kevin Swanson explains in this video that America is an example of a nation that has rejected God and doesn’t want to repent. It is a nation that hears a message of repentance and refuses to listen.

Very rarely will one will stand with a person who calls a nation to repentance. Many people will not speak out on these issues because of fear of retaliation or shaming. This is a nation that has rejected God and His ways. There are no tears of repentance. Men do not gather and cry out for God’s mercy.

John 3:19 (NKJV) – “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”

This nation is the best example of a nation that has rejected God and refuses to repent. A nation that does not want to repent is a nation that hears a message of repentance and castigates the person who gave that lesson. And you'll see that the churches, the media, the politicians, everybody will distance themselves from that man who stood up in the public forum and called a nation to repentance. I've experienced that myself, and it was shocking to see a nation shrink back from the very word itself and reject it wholeheartedly. You'll see almost nobody will stand with a man who calls a nation to repentance if that nation has rejected the message and that's what we see for this nation.

We also see a nation that has consumed pride, a nation that refuses to repent of those most salient sins, the sins that so mark a nation, such as the sin of abortion, the sin of homosexuality, the sin of teaching and education that is not based on the fear of God. These are the salient sins of the day, and you'll find that many churches and many politicians are backing away from these issues. They will not present these issues. They will not fight for a biblical perspective on these issues because they're just too controversial and they will not be elected if they stand on these particular issues. So I think you'll see a nation that has rejected God, rejected the fear of God, rejected human life and rejected God's standards of sexuality, and absolutely no tears of repentance.

You might see some women come together in small congregations and you'll hear some crying out for mercy and you'll see some tears perhaps, but certainly not the men. You do not see men gathering and crying out for God's mercy. You don't see it anywhere. A nation that has abandoned repentance is a nation that will not fall on their knees as the publican did and cry out for God's mercy. This is something we do not see in our nation today.
