What are the fruits of repentance in marriage?

Don Hart explains in this video that just as it is not natural for a wife to submit to her husband it is not natural for a husband to love his wife. Both come as a result of a changed heart and real faith.

So often, husbands are happy to abdicate their responsibility to not be spiritual leaders, protectors, and providers. That is our nature. Our nature is to be selfish and lazy. Part of what repentance looks like in the home is seeing a husband and a wife doing the things that would come as a result of a saved man and woman turning in a new direction.

Ephesians 5:25 (NKJV) – “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.”

The difficulty that a wife encounters is the difficulty of Eve in that she thinks she frequently, she thinks she knows better than her husband. She thinks that she needs to lead him. She knows his frailties and she knows the great vulnerability of following him, of letting him lead. Part of The curse of Eve's fall into sin was that her desire would be to lead the man, to be in a position above and in leadership over her husband, over the man, for a daughter, over her father. It's not natural for a wife to submit.

That's the fruit of a changed heart. That's the fruit of faith. It's not natural for a husband to love his wife like the scripture says we're to love her. That's the product of a changed heart of real faith. So often husbands are happy to abdicate their responsibility, to not be spiritual leaders, to not be providers, to not be protectors, to not be the men in the home that we are called to be in the scriptures.

That's our nature. Our sin nature is to be selfish and lazy and to let somebody else do heavy lifting. And often it's our wives. And part of what repentance looks like in the home is a husband and a wife doing, instead of that which is natural to their flesh, that which becomes a new nature of a saved man and woman turned in a new and different direction.
