What does repentance look like between members of a local church?

Dennis Gunderson explains in this video that we all share the same battles and enduring the same trials in the world. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. We should not be surprised when we have to repent about something to another church member.

When another individual sins against us, our first response and thought should be to recognize that we have sinned against God and yet God forgave us. Rather than taking offense by an offense, we should help each other to be restored and be quick to forgive.

Colossians 3:12-13 (NKJV) – “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.”

What does repentance look like between church members? Well all of us need to recognize that we are brethren in the body of Christ, brothers and sisters, and we do fight the same temptations, we share the same battles, we are enduring the same trials in the world, as Peter says. And so, for one, We should not ever be surprised that we have something to repent about between one another. It should be deemed as really a regular part of church life, a common part of church life. For me to sin against you should not stun you, and likewise I should not be appalled or taken aback that you would sin against me as though it were some sort of surprise or to take it as an intense personal offense.

When we sin against one another and we find we've got something to repent of, I think our first response and thought should be to recognize that, you know, first of all, this was a sin against God and not primarily against me. And even if my brother has sinned against me, I know what it is to sin against God like him. I'm on exactly the same footing and standing as him. And So rather than take this as some sort of effrontery or to be greatly offended by it, immediately as those who are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, come alongside one another and be a blessing to one another to help each other get back on the path.
