What is the distinction between repentance and good works?

Sam Waldron explains in this video that repentance is distinct and separate from the idea of good works. Though repentance will generally bring about good works because of a changed life, it is not repentance itself. Rather, they are merely fruits of repentance and a changed life.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV) – “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”  

At the same time, however, it's important to recognize that repentance is a change of mind. Repentance is not penance. Mind. Repentance is not penance. Penance begins to focus, when it's been used to translate the Greek word metanoia, Penance begins to focus the idea on the fruits of this change of mind.

And it's crucial to understand that though repentance will have fruits, the Bible everywhere teaches, and a number of specific passages in the New Testament that command us to bear fruits according to repentance. The repentance that teach, so to speak, that repentance is a fruit tree.
