How does the holiness of God bring us to repentance?

Paul Thompson explains in this video that the source of repentance is the holiness of God. A sinner will not recognize they oppose God, that there is no good to be found in their actions, or that they are an enemy of God if they do not glimpse the holiness of God. You will not be able to see that you need to repent.

The Christian must understand that all of life will be spent in a continual, necessary position of repenting. Even after salvation, there are still other areas they need to repent of. In short, we are on a continual journey of always repenting.

James 5:16 (NKJV) – “Confess your trespasses[a] to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

The source of repentance is really the holiness of God. If me as a wretched sinner never come to face with the holiness of God, I'll never admit that I'm a sinner. I'll never see that I've opposed God. I'll never acknowledge that I'm even an enemy of God. So without the holiness of God, I won't be able to see that I even need to repent.

For the Christian, the heart of what he does, he must realize that to repent is something he does when he realizes and he sees the holiness of God. But he also sees this, that all of his life is a continual, necessary position of repenting as he sins. And his own pride, his own selfishness, his own unbelief begins to creep back into his life. Or he sees ten years down the road that he may have repented of areas of his life, but he sees now because he's been walking in holiness, there's other areas to repent. And so at the very core of who we are, we're on this continual journey to always repenting of our sins before God.
