What is an example of a person demonstrating genuine, godly repentance?
Jeff Pollard explains in this video that there was a man in his congregation that was deeply involved in pornography. This man sought the Lord, spent time alone in prayer and in the Word, he confessed to his wife and made himself accountable to her and to his elders.
In time, this man utterly broke the chains of that sin. He has gone on as a changed man. This was evidence and fruit of true repentance.
Luke 3:8 (NKJV) – “Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.”
As a pastor of a church of the Lord Jesus Christ, We constantly, my fellow elder and I, have to wrestle with the issue of distinguishing true repentance from false repentance. And it is quite a difficult thing, but I can give an example of both. We had a man in our congregation who was deeply enslaved to pornography. We prayed with him. He struggled and Anyone who's been involved in that knows that it is a tremendous internal struggle in a man to be finished with that wicked and foul practice.
He sought the Lord. He spent time alone in prayer. He spent time in the word of God. He poured his heart out to God. He confessed to his wife.
He made himself accountable to her and to us, the elders. And we saw him in time utterly break the chains of that horrible enslavement. And he has gone on in that as a changed man for which we praise and thank the Lord. There is every reason, every fruit of the evidence as we see in Scripture of a true repentance there.
