Is your sorrow "vertical" or "horizontal"?

Rob Ventura explains in this video that there are two types of sorrow - worldly and godly. Worldly sorrow misses the point that a person has sinned against God. It is "horizontal" in that the individual only sees the effect that sin has on themselves or on others. 

In contrast, godly sorrow is "vertical" in that it recognizes that you have directly sinned against God. A Christian is concerned that they have sinned against God. Such a person understands that he has sinned directly against God. Even if there are other people that have been affected by his sin, he is primarily grieved and sorrowful that he has sinned against God. 

Psalm 69:5 (NKJV) – “O God, You know my foolishness; and my sins are not hidden from You.”

Talk about the different types of sorrow in connection to repentance and of course Paul deals with it in 2 Corinthians. There is a worldly sorrow which leads to death as it were, where it does nothing. It's not a true repentance. It's a repentance that is only horizontal. I'm sorry I wronged you, and that's it.

But it misses the big picture. I have sinned against God. How can I do this wickedness and sin before God? But true biblical repentance is always horizontal. It's always vertical, rather.

It's always looking to the Lord that this is the God that I've sinned against. And then Paul again talks about the godly sorrow and he talks to the Corinthians what vehemence you cleared yourself with, what zeal, what vindication there was. A real Christian, when he sees his sin, when she sees her sin, she's concerned that first and foremost, I've sinned against God, as David said in Psalm 51, against you and only you have I sinned, oh Lord, and done what's evil in your sight. But we know that David sinned against Bathsheba and her husband and the nation on a whole. But first and foremost, he saw that his sin was vertical.
