What happens when Scripture and the words and teachings of men conflict and contradict each other?

David Eddy explains in this video that in the Bible, you have God’s Word and His Word is understandable. That is the foundation of a pastor’s ministry. The Bible contains the very words of God. 

The Roman Catholic was afraid of the Bible being translated into the common language because they knew Scripture did not line up with their words. They claimed that the Pope was the authority and Scripture backed up his words. However, the correct way to view Scripture is that if a person’s opinion contradicts Scripture, then Scripture wins every time. 

John 14:8 (NKJV) - "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"

Soul of Scripture, absolutely. That's the one for me where, you know, to say in the Bible you have God's Word and God's Word is understandable. I think that that for me is, as a pastor, that's the foundation of my ministry, is that I can go to God's word and God speaks. And it's not just a, I hear him speaking in the midst of his word, it's actually his, the Bible is God's word. And that's something that the Reformers really had.

And the medieval church had gotten to the point where they were afraid, this is part of the history, they were afraid of the Bible being put into the languages of the people because they were afraid that if people find out what's in there, they're not going to believe half the stuff we're telling them. And they, you know, and so they said, the church is your authority. You have to believe the priest, you have to believe the bishops, you have to believe the cardinals, and ultimately you have to believe the pope. And Scripture backs up those people. To me, the Reformation said, no, no, people back up scripture.

And if you find a discrepancy between scripture and people, you go with scripture every time. And to me, that as far as someone who gets up and preaches and teaches the Word of God, that is the doctrine of the Reformation that really resonates for me, is I want them to know, don't follow what I'm saying. You might like my interpretation, you might like my application, but you need to follow what God says. That's the foundation. And to have that is really important, I think.
