How is worldly sorrow different from godly sorrow?

Paul Carrington explains in this video that the difference between worldly and godly sorrow is night and day. People can cry genuine tears and experience guilt, but it is not godly sorrow if they don’t repent of their sin. Worldly sorrow does not lead to repentance, a change of heart, and salvation.

Godly sorrow involves a clinging to the Lord, a recognition that if He does not save us, we are completely undone. Worldly sorrow does not result in any permanent change or affection for God. Godly sorrow totally changes our view and our affection for God.

2 Corinthians 7:9 (NKJV) – “Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing.” 

The difference between worldly sorrow and godly sorrow I think are night and day. We do a lot of work at an abortion clinic locally And you often see women either entering the clinic and they're weeping or they're leaving weeping, but they've actually gone through with the abortion. You can talk to a lot of different folks and they can have tears, genuine tears, where they feel that they've done wrong and they've been wracked by guilt, but it doesn't lead them to a wholesale change of life and a realignment of their allegiance from the devil to Jesus Christ. Worldly sorrow doesn't actually lead to repentance and a change of heart. Whereas godly sorrow is sorrow that acknowledges that I am undone, like we read about in Corinthians.

We see that I was doing wrong and I was actually going my own way and now I want to live and I want to walk according to God's ways. It's a clinging to the Lord. It's a recognition that if He does not save me, I am totally undone. There's nothing that I can do And so it's a total reliance on Him, whereas again, worldly sorrow, it doesn't actually result in any permanent change. It doesn't really result in any affection for God, whereas The sorrow that we read about, the godly sorrow in the Bible, totally changes our view and our affection for the living God.
