What is the effect of seeing Scripture as sufficient?

Carlton McLeod explains in this video that it is one thing to believe that Scripture is infallible and inspired, but it is another to believe that it is sufficient for all of life. In Scripture, we find everything we need for life, ministry, and discipleship. God's Word should not be one of many guides that we turn to for guidance and direction - rather, it is the only source of wisdom and truth.

All that we need for instruction, wisdom, and learning about God can be found in Scripture. Scripture is sufficient in that it requires no adding or removing of certain sections for it to be both relevant and authoritative today.

Deuteronomy 12:32 (NKJV) – “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.”

I think for me, when I began to see scripture as sufficient, you know, yes it's infallible, yes it's inspired, yes it's inerrant, but what resonates with my heart and what has been transformative in my family life transformative in our church life is to see scripture as sufficient and I have to admit that there were many years where I'd heard of solar scripture and I've heard of the five solas and so forth, but when I began to see scripture as sufficient that God had given us this Bible and that in His great providence and in His great wisdom, out of the Bible is everything we need for life and for ministry and for family and for evangelism and for discipleship. That was life transforming for me because up until that point, it was the Bible, but hmm, let me think of some good things that I could do to do this or do that. And the Bible is great. And yes, but oh, you know, let me let me check my own wisdom and let's see what the latest magazines, church magazines are saying. And so that was really a turn for me and it fires me up even now.

And it gives me great comfort and great peace. All I really have to do is turn to the Word of God, be empowered by the Spirit of God, declare that Jesus alone saves, trusts in His grace, and give God glory for it all. It gives me great peace and great confidence and yes it fires me up. You
