What was the effect of sola Scriptura upon the Roman Catholic Church?
Sam Waldron explains in this video that the doctrine of sola Scriptura was first emphasized during the Reformation. There was a clear division between the Roman Catholic Church and sola Scriptura. The Roman Catholic Church denied the doctrine of sola Scriptura and instead, wanted to base their doctrine on both Scripture and their long-held traditions.
John Calvin stated that Scripture alone was the foundation for the life and ministry of the Church itself. The doctrine of sola Scriptura was foundational then for reformation within the Church and it still ought to be just as relevant and foundational today.
Hebrews 13:8 (NKJV) – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
At the doctrine of sola scriptura, or scripture alone, which was emphasized in the Reformation and was taken out of a kind of internal debate in the church. And there was a clear division between the Roman Catholic Church that denied scripture alone, wanted to base Christian doctrine on both the oral tradition of the church and the Scriptures, and the articulation and clear statement of the doctrine of Scripture alone has been crucial and foundational for reformation in the church, was foundational then, and I believe is foundational today. And I particularly think that Kelvin went a little further than Luther on this issue and thought that Scripture alone was the foundation not just for church doctrine but for the life and ministry and worship of the church itself, I think that that is crucial, especially as it comes to fruition in what's called the Regulative Principle of the Church.
