What is a distinction between the Reformation and the world we live in today?

Kevin Swanson explains in this video that one distinction is that we have a much easier access to the Word of God. They did not have it available in the common tongue, in their churches, or in their homes. Though we each have access to Scripture, many have decided to take human systems and place them on top of the Word so that Scripture cannot speak for itself. In short, we have de-emphasized the relevancy of Scripture. 

Today, man commonly brings in his own thinking, emotional experiences, and considerations to dictate the applicability of Scripture. But, the entire Word of God, including the Old Testament, still applies to us today. We must apply the entire Word to all of life, not just parts of Scripture, but all of it.  

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) - "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

You know the big difference between the pre-Reformation period and our period today is in terms of the access to the Word of God. They did not have the Word of God available in the common tongue in every home or even in every church. We do. We have five copies in our homes, ten copies in boxes in the basement. The difference is we have de-relevantized the Word of God.

We have taken human systems and we have imposed them upon the Word of God so the Word doesn't speak for itself. We have theological systems that have been developed that basically displace the teaching of the Word. Moreover, Man brings in his experience, man brings in his emotional experience, man brings in his ethical considerations. Man says, well, I don't really want the Word of God to apply to here, I don't want the Word of God to apply over here. So effectively, the Word of God is hampered in terms of how much it applies.

Moreover, there's about two-thirds of the Word of God, that is the Old Testament, that has very little relevance to the average person today. Actually, Paul said, all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for instruction in righteousness to equip the man of God for every good work. And he intended to bring in the Old Testament when he spoke of that. Remember the New Testament was not canonized when he said that in 2 Timothy 3, 16 and 17. So the entire word of God, including the Old Testament, is there to equip the man of God for every good work.

It's when you take out a pair of scissors and cut out two-thirds of the word and says, well, the Old Testament and the Old Testament law has no bearing whatsoever on the New Testament church. It's at that point that you have severely curtailed your sword, the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. So let's be sure that we bring back the word in its full relevance, all 66 books, and let's apply it to all of life to equip the man of God for every single good works. You
