We need to understand God to be holy because that's who he really is. That's the basis for our worship. It's a basis for our repentance, our coming into right relationship with him. It's our basis for conviction of our sin. We understand something of the nature of God by His law.

And we understand how far we have come short of the glory of God. We are drawn to our knees. That's what it takes for the public to fall down on his knees, cry out, God, have mercy on me, a sinner. It's that view of who God is and who we are in respect to him. Isaiah responded in the proper sense when he got a picture of the holiness of God.

He put his hand on his mouth and said, I'm a man of unclean lips, a children of unclean lips, meaning that he was instantly aware of his sinfulness, and it was The mouth that was his chiefest concern, because the mouth tends to be the instrument by which so much of human sin occurs. So that's why he has his hand in his mouth. And he falls on his face. And he cries out he's undone. And his mouth is cleansed by the burning coal but that's the response the responses I'm undone woe is me that's that's a response of anybody who's come into contact with the holiness of God.

And that of course is why we seek out the righteousness of Christ to cover us. And we seek out the sanctification of the Holy Spirit that's working in us to continually purge those sins and help us to mortify our sinful lusts and engage the process of sanctification. You
