What role does the Holy Spirit play in the process of holiness?

Joel Beeke begins this video by defining holiness. He explains that holiness involves us becoming more like God and more separate from the world. That is the essence of holiness.

Once the Spirit works in us, the process of growing in holiness is full of ups and downs. The Holy Spirit will cleanse us by the blood of Christ and with the means and grace to make us holy. The blood of Christ justifies us and the Holy Spirit will make us perfectly holy before God the Father through the blood of Christ.

Romans 8:26 (NKJV) – “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

And so I would define holiness this way, that we become more like God, more consecrated to God, and that we become more separate from the world, live more antithetically to this world. That's really the idea of holiness. And once the Spirit works that in us, then this is an increasing process with ups and downs and if we if we fall into sin Or we grow lukewarm it decreases, but the amazing thing is he keeps on chipping away at us. He keeps on working he's so concerned about our holiness that he's not going to To let us get away with being unholy. He'd rather have a hole in our garment than to see dirt there. He's going to cleanse us with the blood of Christ and with a means of grace. Even if we kick and fight against that, he's going to make us holy. Because Christ has done too much to let us go. And so if Christ is our justification, Christ is going to be our sanctification, our holiness, through the Holy Spirit.

So the Holy Spirit does the complete work, and one day he'll make us perfectly holy before his Father in heaven, and there'll be no spot and no blemish, any wrinkle or any such thing, and we'll be adorned with a white wedding garment, absolutely spotless, and we'll be so perfect that Christ will look at us and say, I see no sin in my Jacob and no transgression in my Israel. We'll be so perfectly whole that he'll marry us and will be his bride and will love him and live to his glory forever. Hasten the day, Lord. Thank you.
