How can we grow in the fear of God?
Jason Dohm explains in this video that the fear of God is something that grows through your life – it is something that results from knowing and learning more about Him. There is always more to learn about God.
Obviously, there is plenty of room for growth once you are saved. We learn more about God through Scripture reading and prayer. The more you learn about God through Scripture reading and the more time you spend in prayer, the more you fear God and want to learn more about who He is, which ultimately drives you closer to God and understand who He is. Understandably, it is very important that a believer does not neglect time in prayer and reading Scripture.
Proverbs 8:17 (NKJV) – “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me.”
I do think the fear of God, generally for most people, is going to be something that's going to grow throughout their life, throughout their Christian walk. Why is that? Well, I think it is fed by knowing God and understanding God. The God of The Bible is a fearful God, and you might not understand Him very well when you first get saved. And so there's a lot of room for growth, but the more you meet with Him in prayer and the more you study His Word and learn what this God is like, the more you're afraid of Him in all the good ways.
Actually, the fear of the Lord drives good things in your life. It doesn't drive you from God, it actually drives you to God. If you're getting it in a regenerate condition, if you've been born again, and you're getting it from a better understanding of God in the Bible, it's going to be nothing but good and help to you, not to drive you away from God, but to help you to understand who He is and how important it is that you Stay close to Him.
