How does the Gospel increase our fear of God?
In this video, Paul Washer explains that the fear of God is not the Gospel but is a product of the Gospel. The Gospel is grace and grace alone. Those who hear the Gospel, repent, and believe the Gospel are regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are given new hearts, hearts that can truly fear God for who He is. The heart of stone that formerly rebelled against God is now one that can honor and fear God. This wondrous work of God working in the heart of an unbeliever naturally creates a fear of God, a feeling of awe when we see His work in our lives!
Ezekiel 36:26 (NKJV) – “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
Holiness and the fear of God are not the gospel. They are products of the gospel. The gospel is a gospel of grace and grace alone. A man is a sinner. A man is a rebel against God.
A man is dying under judgment. The gospel is preached to him. The gospel of who God is. The gospel of who he is and the gospel of what God has done in Christ, that he has sent his son who lived a perfect life, who went to Calvary, who bore the sinner's sin, who died under the judgment of God, who paid the justice of God, satisfied the demands of that justice, appease the wrath of God, rose again from the dead, is now seated at the right hand of God, and that all those who repent and believe the gospel will be saved. And we know that those who do repent and believe have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit.
They've been given new hearts. No longer do they have hearts of stone that cannot respond to divine stimuli, but they have hearts of flesh that willingly respond to divine stimuli. You
