Children learn about God by their parents, and part of their learning comes from a father who constrains evil in his home. Hebrews 12 makes it plain that God chastises every son whom he receives. This is why a father who chastises his children is helping them learn the fear of the Lord. With this, a child comes to understand how a loving father can also chastise. And, parents who refuse to chastise their children are harming their children, regarding the development of the fear of the Lord. There is a connection between chastising children and them learning to fear the Lord. They can see you, they can talk to you. Though God is real, though God is near, they can't see Him. And they can't converse with Him like they can converse with you. So some of the earliest things that children learn about God are through godly parents.

That's why God wants children to be brought up in the training and the admonition of the Lord. In the chastisements that we've had in our home, I've always wanted them to be fearful experiences. I do want to be loved by my children, but I want to be feared by my children as a man who's been delegated authority by God, to see that our home looks as much like his kingdom as we can make it, where evil is constrained. And the beauty of the kingdom is nurtured and flourishes as much as you can make it flourish among a home full of people who have sins and shortcomings. I think that is true.

There's a great connection between, a significant connection between chastisement and the fear of the Lord. And the inverse is true. Parents who refuse to chastise their children and have discipline be a fearful thing in the right ways are handicapping their children in that way.
