In this short clip, Evelyn Maxson, a missionary in Malawi, says that although it was hard for her to leave all her friends to go to the mission field, it has helped her to have a closer relationship with her husband. For she has had to share a more of the things that she has been going through with him rather then with her friends. She says going to the mission field has also helped to make her less selfish because her problems become small when compared to those around her.

So you leave the United States, you go into a totally different culture, and friendship just isn't the same. How do you grapple with that? It is a challenge. I think it has drawn me closer to my husband, and I have to share more with him the things that I'm going through. And I find that I find more joy in giving and reaching out to other people than to hope that they're going to help me with my problems.

You always find that your problems are not half as big as everyone else's when you start to look at them.
