This is the most important question that a man can ask. How do we break this down for a child? The best way to begin is to think about how we know one another. We might know things about a person without personally knowing the individual. The only way we can know each other is to communicate with one another. In the Bible, God communicates to us. So we go to the Bible to hear what God says about Himself and us. This is how we learn who He is. But there is still a breakdown in this relationship. Something has to be overcome so that we can truly know God.
The Bible tells of Jesus Christ. We read the Word of God, learn who Jesus is, go to Him as a sinner, and pray that the Holy Spirit would teach us to know God through Christ.
"And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." - John 17:3
So the most important question that a man can ever ask is, how can I know God? If someone asks that in our church, we rejoice, we want to sit down and give them an answer to the question. Then a child asks the same question and we're challenged, how do we break down this answer so that a child can understand? So if an eight year old were to ask, how can I know God? Perhaps the best way to begin an answer is to think about how we know one another.
How do you know me? We might know things about a person without personally knowing that individual. The only way that you can know me or I can know you is if we communicate one to another. In the Bible God communicates to us, he speaks. So we go to the Bible to hear what God says and the more we listen to what God says about himself and even about us and what He requires of us, we're learning who He is.
But there's a problem, because in the relationship that we have with God as sinners, there's a breakdown. And so something ultimately has to be overcome so that we can truly know God. The Bible tells us about Jesus Christ. So again, we go to the Word of God and we listen to everything that God has said in His Word, points us to Jesus. We learn who Jesus is as the Son of God, the only Savior.
We go to him as a sinner, and then we pray that the Holy Spirit would teach us to know God through Jesus Christ. So Everything comes back to the Word of God. How can we know God? Only as he tells us about himself and his will in the scriptures. And it all points to Jesus Christ.
Bible says this is eternal life, that we know him, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom He has sent. You
