"The power of God is that ability and strength whereby He can bring to pass whatever He pleases. Whatever His infinite wisdom may direct and whatever the infinite purity of His will may resolve. As holiness is the beauty of all God's attributes, so power is that which gives life and action to all the perfections of the divine nature. How vain or how empty would be the eternal councils of God if power did not step in to execute them. Without power, His mercy would be feeble pity, His promises would be an empty sound. His threatenings would be a mere scarecrow. God's power is like Himself: infinite, eternal, incomprehensible. It can neither be checked or restrained or frustrated by anything in creation. As His essences is immense, not able to be confined in any place; as it is eternal, not able to be measured in time; so it is almighty, not to be limited with regard to action." ~ Stephen Charnock
This is our God.
Before we stop thinking about that, let us contrast ourselves with God. Sometimes we think there are very strong people, such as a strong, godly man or a strong, godly woman. But I think that this is misunderstanding things.
I think that everyone in the kingdom of God is an utter weakling and the only people that God has ever used have been weaklings. How do we see strength in Christians then? We see the weakling who has had his eyes opened to the strength of God and his heart conquered by God's love. They come through this life doing whatever is required of them in the present moment. For the Christian, real growth is realizing more and more how nothing I am and how weak I am and to be happy to be self-forgetful as I look at the omnipotent God.
It's by a Puritan named Stephen Sharnock. He says this, the power of God is that ability and strength whereby he can bring to pass whatever he pleases. Whatever his infinite wisdom may direct and whatever the infinite purity of His will may resolve. As holiness is the beauty of all God's attributes, so power is that which gives life and action to all the perfections of the divine nature. How vain or how empty would be the eternal counsels of God if power did not step in to execute them.
Without power His mercy would be feeble pity, His promises would be an empty sound, His threatenings would be a mere scarecrow. God's power is like Himself, infinite, eternal, incomprehensible. It can neither be checked or restrained or frustrated by anything in creation. As His essence is immense, not able to be confined in any place as it is eternal Not able to be measured in time. So it is Almighty not to be limited with regard to action That's our God But before we stop thinking about that, let's contrast ourselves with God.
Sometimes we think that there are really strong people, a strong godly man, a strong woman, but I think that that's really misunderstanding things. I think that everybody in the kingdom of God is an utter weakling and the only people God has ever used have been weaklings. So how do we see strength in Christians? What we're seeing is the weakling who's had their eyes opened to the strength of God and their heart conquered by His love. They come through this life obeying, doing whatever is required of them in the present moment.
So for the Christian, real growth is realizing more and more how nothing I am, how weak I am, and to be happy to be self-forgetful as we look at the omnipotent God.
