In this sermon, Jason Dohm shares his personal testimony to emphasize the value of sharing experiences of the greatness and goodness of God. He discusses his journey from being raised United Methodist, through his time in Charismatic churches, and eventually becoming theologically Reformed. He reflects on the gospel promises that were made to him when he first heard the gospel, such as Jesus undertaking his care, the Holy Spirit indwelling him, and God being his Father. Jason testifies that after 40 years, he realizes that not even half of the goodness of God was told to him, and that Jesus satisfies his soul even in times of sorrow and loss.
Two days ago I had a daughter ask me, what are you speaking on her burnings of the soul? I said, I don't know yet. She said, you don't know what's burning your soul? I thought, mind your own business, Anna. She gives me four grandchildren, thinks she can say anything she wants to to her father.
That's actually true. This is burning in my soul. Psalm 66 verse 16, come and hear all you who fear God and I will declare what he has done for my soul. I want to talk for just a few minutes about the value of personal testimony to the greatness and the goodness of God. I wasn't always Reformed.
I was raised United Methodist. I was very proud and self-righteous. God saved me. I was discipled largely by Charismatics. I went to Charismatic churches in late high school through college.
Then God put me on this trajectory, sort of a long trajectory, of becoming theologically Reformed. I love it. I'm not sorry. These truths are bedrock for us. We don't have anything without the great truths about God and what man is really like and what it takes to be saved and who has to do it.
But these great truths that are bedrock to us are more than just facts to be theologically grasped. They are realities about a great God, but also a good God, a tender God, a merciful God, which sustain a person in any circumstance of life. In reflecting, I have to admit that there's been much too little of that in my preaching and in my conversations. Listen, God saved me 40 years ago, more than 40 years ago, and the people who communicated the gospel to me made me promises. Thankfully they weren't health and wealth promises, they were promises that Jesus would undertake my care, that the Spirit would indwell me, comfort me, strengthen me, sustain me, produce fruit in me, that God is a Father and that God would be my Father.
And after 40 years, this is my testimony. They didn't tell me the half of it. Every promise that was made to me sounded almost too good to be true, but now after 40 years, I look back and say, it was so understated to the real thing, to the real God who really undertakes the care of his people. Not the half was told to me. If all of it was told to me, I'm not sure I would have been able to believe it.
God in my life, in our life together, has given us many, many, many good gifts. But I'll tell you this. This, if God stripped them all away and sometimes in his own wisdom he strips them all away, I could not walk away from him. Jesus satisfies the soul. So praise God for the good gifts.
That's all true. That's all real. We should pray for them, desire them, but God is better than the sum total of them. And if he strips them away and leaves you with nothing but sorrows and a broken body, your soul can flourish. The fellowship with Jesus can still be sweet without all of the good gifts that you've enjoyed.
I long to say those words. I long to say those words because they're true. God has kept every promise that he ever made to me, the gospel promises that were made to me not the half were told to me if God has done something for your soul don't be backward to say so. These truths are great they're wonderful they are bedrock for us but People need to know that these are realities that are experienced by the people of God day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year, and they'll sustain you. Jesus will satisfy your soul.
God, I thank you that all these things are so true. They are glorious doctrines, but your people experience them day by day and week by week and month by month and year by year and decade by decade and they look back and they say not that half was told me. Thank you that you satisfy the soul in Jesus' name.
