Where does true joy come from?

Brian Borgman explains in this video that young people often are bombarded by the false message that true joy can be found apart from God. The World promises joy will be found through wealth, through job titles, or through friends and other relationships. 

This is a faulty view. We cannot find true joy in temporary things. We need to instill in our young people that there can be a greater pleasure and a greater joy than what the world has to offer. True joy is only found in God. 

John 15:11 (NKJV) - "These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full."

Yeah, I mean I think in general young people face messaging from our culture that absolutely ignores the enjoyment of God or delighting in God. I think in particular for young women, the messaging of our culture is that joy really comes by having lots of friends, having lots of likes on Facebook, getting a lot of attention, having lots of boyfriends. And so the messaging of our culture puts enjoyment on, in a sense, just the fleeting pleasures of life. And here's the thing is that, you know, sin is basically what we do when we're not enjoying God, right? We're looking for joy somewhere else.

And so our culture is continually trying to divert our attention, especially, you know, in a peculiar way, the attention of our young women, away from true enjoyment of God himself. And so, you know, you have this great passage in Jeremiah 2 13, Be a paldo heavens, be a paldo earth. My people have committed two evils. They have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and have hewn out for themselves broken cisterns which hold no water. Any time that we try to seek joy and pleasure in this life, it's like trying to drink out of a broken cistern, and all the while we are neglecting really the true, eternally satisfying fountain of living water, which is God himself.

And so I think that we need to instill in our young people, and our young women, that there is a greater joy and a greater pleasure than what the world has to offer. It of course is unseen because it's found in God, but it really is. It is far better. And so you choose the greater reward instead of the passing pleasures of sin.
