How can fathers help their sons learn about what it is to be a godly man?

Ephesians 6:4 (NKJV) - "And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord."

We do live in a feminized culture and so fathers have to proactively take a role to teach their sons how to be manly as the Bible defines manhood. We always want to go to the Bible for our definitions. So if I were counseling a father, I would say two things. Teach the Bible. The definitions are right in the Bible.

The models are right in the Bible. The Bible is actually where the manly men are. And David is a good example of that. He's a skilled musician, he's a poet, he's a songwriter, he's a warrior, he's a king, and so you really have a multifaceted man who's not all warrior and not all poet. He's actually a mixture of these things.

Not that every man has to be a warrior and a poet, but it gives you a view of the full range of multifaceted manhood. This is a man after God's own heart, a man who is seeking God. And that expresses itself in a variety of ways. So he should teach the Bible so that a young boy and then a young man has the Bible's definition for everything related to manhood and because that's where the manly men are. And then of course a father has a responsibility to model it, to sort of put flesh on what the scripture teaches by showing him day by day, minute by minute, how what the truths of scripture work their way out into the life.
