What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ?

Dr. Joel Beeke defines a disciple as a follower of a teacher and specifically, in the context of Christianity, a follower of Christ and His teachings. He stresses that being a disciple of Christ means not only to believe in His teachings but also to live according to them. This includes denying oneself, carrying one's cross, and following Jesus. It means that our entire lives should be oriented towards fulfilling God's will.

The ultimate aim of a true disciple, as Dr. Beeke mentions, is to glorify God and to find joy in Him through and by Christ forever. He emphasizes that being a disciple is not a passive state but an active pursuit. It is a lifelong commitment to want to do God's will and to constantly strive to live a life that glorifies Him.

Matthew 16:24 (NKJV): 'Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me."'

A disciple is a follower of a teacher. And when we speak of Being a disciple of Christ, that means you follow Christ. You follow His teaching. Jesus Himself said, you cannot be My disciple if you don't take up the cross. Deny yourself.

Follow Me. So, I just actually preached a sermon a couple months ago on what is a disciple and basically I had three points. You know, you deny yourself, take up the cross, and you follow Christ. So your whole life is geared toward wanting to do God's will. Sort of the theme of this conference, that your chief end is to glorify God.

So when you're a disciple, you want to glorify God and enjoy Him in and through and by and unto Christ forever.
