The sermon titled 'A Família que Adora Junta Ep. 04' emphasizes the significance of worship as the most important event of the week and encourages families to prepare for it with intentionality and devotion. It draws comparisons between meeting God and meeting a significant figure like the President, underscoring the need for readiness and reverence. The speaker shares personal anecdotes about instilling a love for worship in their children, likening their anticipation to Pavlovian conditioning. The sermon references the Puritans' practices, advocating for spiritual preparation on Saturday nights and early Sunday mornings to ready the soul for worship. It stresses the importance of family worship and the integration of sermons into daily life. The sermon highlights the need for continuous worship beyond the church service, recommending family discussions, prayers, and scripture reading as means to keep the spirit of worship alive. The sermon concludes by urging Christians to intentionally cultivate a desire for God's presence and to view weekly worship as a preparation for eternal communion with God.
The worship is the biggest event of the week. It is the biggest event of our lives. It is what life represents. So you face it in a sacred way and are prepared for it. Ecclesiastes said, he says, Keep your feet When you enter the house of God, be more ready to hear than to sacrifice the thieves.
This word is powerful. God wants his people ready to worship him. If you were to meet the President of the United States of America, I don't think you'd wake up until late, if you were to meet him early in the morning and enter his office. All disorganized, one minute before the meeting. God wants his people to be ready to adore him.
He wants them to come to his presence with songs. He wants them to come to his presence with acts of grace. He wants us to be ready to hear it. The family that loves together. Episode 4 Preparation for public worship.
When my children were growing up, I wanted them to find joy in being with God's people. I wanted them to anticipate this. I wanted them to kind of salivate in a certain way, you know, like Pavlov's dog when a certain stimulus was given. So what I did as a father was to quote the scriptures for my children. Before church, usually in the car on the way, I said, I was happy when they told me, let's go to the house of the Lord.
And I said this to them again and again. My great desire was to help my children understand the beauty, the goodness, the vivifying nature of being in the presence of God and being with the people of God, the people of God there, imperfect, in the midst of perfect words, in the midst of beautiful songs, in the midst of prayers and thanks. I wanted them to desire this, But it was in my heart that they wished so much to be in the Lord's atrium that when we entered that car they said, I was glad when they told me, let's go to the Lord's house. And this session is about how to prepare for worship. It's all about how to prepare.
I hope you Enjoy. The time that they usually spent worshiping, but also the pre-worship and post-worship. Thomas Watson, for example, has several points about how families should prepare for the worship before coming. He makes an interesting comment. You need to dress your soul, not just your body, before coming.
And in fact, the Puritans advised people and families to reserve time on Saturday night. If possible, to warm up their souls in preparation for the worship, doing extra devotions, maybe talking about what the minister will pray, if he is praying expositively in a book, they would talk about it. They would study the text that he will pray in advance. About the Puritans, put it this way. He said, at that time, you must remember, they usually made bread at night and kept it in the oven.
An improvised oven during the night and it was hot on Sunday morning. The Puritans said that you should also warm your soul on Saturday night. On Sunday morning, get up early, do extra devotional prayers and pray as a family for the minister in particular. Go to the church and get there early. You can pray silently on the bench.
And then, when the worship begins, you will be anxious to worship and your soul will be warmed up, and you will be ready to hear the word of God. Now compare this with today's days, when young people are out until late. They go home, sleep little, wake up at the last minute, and fall on the church bench without prayer. A minute before the worship begins, they will not be ready for the worship. God can do great things and bless them in the sermon, but the Puritans were right.
The worship is the biggest event of the week, it is the biggest event of our lives, it is what life represents. So you face it in a sacred way and are prepared for Him. If you were to meet the President of the United States of America, I don't think you'd wake up until late, if you were to meet him early in the morning and enter his office. All disheveled, one minute before the meeting, we are meeting someone much greater, the Puritans would say, than the President of the United States. We are meeting the living God.
And let me add this, that after the worship, They also said that it is our duty to retain what we hear and our duty to continue worshiping God in the privacy of our homes. So the Puritan father would go home with his family. Let's say he had a 7-year-old son, a 11-year-old and a 16-year-old. So he would try to ask these children about the sermon, kind of test them, examine them, encourage them, comfort them and exalt them. And he would try to bring all the sermon to their level.
Then they would discuss the sermon again. And then, probably, there would be a good chance of him inviting friends, maybe Sunday or the second night. And they would talk about the sermon again. The children would hear the adults talking about the sermon. Or maybe on that fourth night.
During the family worship, something would happen in the scripture that they are talking about, and something would happen that would remind him of the sermon. On the last Sunday night, he would bring it back. Thus, a father has the duty to integrate in the day-to-day, in the family count, in real life, the sermons from last Sunday, for his family. If a father wanted to bring his family prepared for worship, I think the wisest thing he can do is, before leaving in the morning, when everyone is ready to go, bow their heads, ask that their wives and children join them in prayer, and ask God alive to prepare their hearts to offer a biblical and joyful worship to God, prepare your hearts to receive the word of God so that they may be transformed. And it's not bad to sing along the way of the Church is something wonderful to discuss.
Along the way. To sing about what the pastor has preached. If they know what he will preach, prepare the children in this way. Ecclesiastes said, he said, Keep your feet when you enter the house of God, and be more ready to hear than to sacrifice the tolls. This word is powerful.
God wants his people.
To worship Him. God wants His people to be ready to worship Him. He wants them to come with songs to His presence. He wants them to come to His presence with thanksgiving.
He wants us to be ready to hear him, to have his wife and his children prepared for this, whether they are preparing at home before going, or it can also be in the car before they arrive, or if it is in the car after they arrive. It is necessary that there is a sense of saying, Children, we are entering the presence of God. We want to be ready for that. When our minds are scattered with all the things of the week, sometimes even the rush and the agitation, and tragically, even the discussions between husbands and wives before they get in the car and go to worship, we are often with an absolutely unholy mentality to enter the presence of God. So what is vital to us is that we know our God, that we came here with the purpose of offering true worship in spirit.
And in truth, and that our whole family knows that this is what we are going to do. We are not just going to listen to a sermon. We are going to enter the presence of God and magnify Him for who He is and the salvation that He has planned for His Son. We are going to listen to the story of His Son, Jesus Christ, who died and rose again so that we may have life. Let us listen to the words of the Holy Spirit, and let us pray that the Spirit may be working among us, so that we may offer our God a worship that He deserves.
In addition, we are offering the sacrifice of the tolls. Therefore, the parents need to realize that they do not want their family to enter God's house, ready to offer the sacrifice of the tolls, but yes, ready to glorify and glorify the one who loved us before the foundation of the world. Well, if you have the opportunity to prepare your family for the community cult, and the best way to do this, I believe, is to go to the scriptures. If you can find out what the text is for that Sunday, have a familiarity with it. Start studying it, listening to it and then examine yourself in front of the Lord.
To see if there is anything that has broken the communion with a relative, maybe even someone outside your family, you just want to make everything clear and clear before entering the presence of the Lord. So you prepare your heart with the scriptures, you examine yourself, you confess, restore relationships if necessary. And then you start praising the Lord and seeking him, And ask Him to do a work in your heart, in which He is honored, because if your desire is to leave worship feeling good with what you did, you completely made a mistake. I think we have a lot to learn from Jewish people who prepare their families for the Sabbath. And Sunday is our Sabbath.
On Saturdays we try to finish our cleaning at home. We... Before sunset, we are ready. We don't have to do anything on that Saturday night and during the whole... The whole Sunday.
We all gather at dinner table and read the scriptures together and we don't start on Sunday morning, we start on Saturday night. We pray for each other, we pray for the family. My wife, she prays, I pray, and I guide the family. In the reading of the Word, and we declare to our children that the Sabbath has begun now, now this day is the day of our Lord. We are giving this day to the Lord, and this day is a day of worship.
We don't even wash our dishes on this day, we leave it for Monday morning. We don't watch movies, we don't do anything that possibly distracts us from His Word, so we sing songs together. We have a piano and our children play the piano and they play and glorify the name of God and then we sing hymns to the Lord. We sing the scripture to the Lord. Be prepared, make sure that there are no more tasks left.
Leave them behind. Don't work. God knows us better. God knows that we need to rest. God knows that we need to rest in His Word.
We need to open His word and continue glorifying and teaching this principle to our children and let others see this, let others learn from this example. And when I say rest, you don't just stay home and sleep. We worship God, we pray. You pray for your friends, you pray for the lost, you pray for those who gave their lives to Christ. Well, take care of your souls, Go and talk to other Christians and help them in any way you can.
To worship God in a congregation, in the Bible, is the most important type of worship. See, God loves the worship that happens in the family. And I am ashamed to realize how many evangelical and reformed parents do not have family worship. It is a fatal blow to Christianity. They may have a domicile teaching.
They may be called Christians who believe in the Bible and everything else. But it is shocking how few evangelists and Reformed Fathers regularly gather their children around the table to sing hymns, teach the Word of God, pray, and everything else. This is important. Private worship is important. But if you are not worshiping God regularly on your own, and alone with Him, there will be a tremendous vulnerability in your life to the influence of Satan.
But the psalm says, God loves the gates of Zion more than all the places of the dwelling of Jacob. I would like to have memorized what Spurgeon said about this. It was one of the best quotes in the world. God loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. God loves the dwellings of Jacob.
God loves our homes, families and what happens, especially when we adore Him. But God especially loves the gates of Zion, and worship happens in Zion. What was Zion? Zion was where the temple was. It was where the congregation of the Lord would gather to worship Him.
So, no matter how important other cults are, the great thing is the congregational worship on the Lord's Day, which is the most important moment. Now, during the week, we have several types of biblical studies and things of that kind if people are interested in coming. But from Monday to Saturday, we expect that parents and families have as their main priority the family and vocation. If after spending time with your family and your call, you have time for biblical study, great! On Sunday, you put your call.
Not even, work with your call. Leave aside the weekly occupations and recreations. Gather your family for the worship of God, which begins with the preparation. The worship of God in a congregation begins before you sit in the church building. It begins when you prepare yourself and your family.
For worship, you say to yourself and your children, What will we do now? In the presence of whom are we about to enter? The important thing about prayer is to prepare yourself for prayer. A very important part of worship is to prepare yourself for worship and to have in mind what we are about to do. Because if you come to the cold worship, you go to bed late on Saturday night, watch television until 1 am, go to a party or something like that, and then you get up only when it's time to take a shower, put the children in the car and go to church.
And you arrive at the church late and sit down. Ah, you can forget about worship. You are not prepared. You don't know what you are about to do. Do you think we would do this with a famous person we meet in the morning?
Let's find that famous person. So we wake up until 2 a.m. Do we just wake up in time to run to her presence, sweating and sweating like this? No, we prepare ourselves. But we don't even think about preparing ourselves for the fact that we are entering the presence of the living God.
This is one of the most important things that parents and mothers can do. It is preparing and showing their children by example and by word. How to prepare to worship God and not be late? I think that when people worship God, This is not so important to them. One of the things I learned about worship is that if you really did not have a personal worship experience, did not have a moment to understand who God is, what He did, appreciate Him and show him this tremendous worship in front of himself.
And this word did not touch you individually. You will probably not see your family following the example. If it has not caused an impression on you, it will not cause an impression on the people you lead as a father or as a pastor in the church. Assuming that this will happen alone is a great tragedy in our days. This will have to be intentional.
If we are going to guide our families to worship, we must do it intentionally. And so, by doing this intentionally, the parents simply need to know that We have to reserve time. When we bring the whole family together, we need to be willing to turn off the TV. Turn off this television. Do what you need to do.
So, simply distance yourself from the traps of this world that distract us so easily. And lead a people, a family, that would be willing and prepared to go as a church, as a family, to the meeting of the saints, and planning us on Monday to prepare ourselves, if the Lord permits. The next Sunday, the next day of the Lord, this family is already preparing to meet with the saints on Sunday, so that the children do not wake up on Sunday morning, asking if we are going to church today. Fathers, if the children ask this question on Sunday, my recommendation would be, wake up on Monday and prepare your children to know that, Pais, se as crianças fazem essa pergunta no domingo, minha recomendação seria, acordem na segunda-feira e preparem seus filhos para saber que, que se o Senhor permitir, no próximo dia do Senhor. Não há dúvidas.
Vamos acordar e iremos à casa do Senhor e nos reuniremos com o povo do Senhor, e adoraremos o Senhor, e somente o Senhor adoraremos. There is no doubt. We will wake up and go to the Lord's house and we will gather with the people of the Lord, and we will adore the Lord, and we will only adore the Lord. We will not put a soccer game on top of this meeting. We will not put a TV program on top of this meeting.
We will not put a soccer match on top of this commitment. As a family, we will gather with the people of the Lord and we will worship the Lord. The best text of all in the scriptures that addresses, in my opinion, the whole issue of preparing for the Sabbath, is Isaiah chapter 58. And in Isaiah's prophecy, where he speaks about the importance of the Sabbath not being about seeking one's own pleasure. Not only something that pleases you, but something that is especially focused on God.
And on the Sabbath day, there are acts of necessity that must be done. Eat your animals, and you must, of course. Sometimes, prepare a meal, unless you have already done this on Saturday night. Certain things must be done, but in general, the Sabbath is to focus on worshiping God, and to be focused on acts of mercy and on enjoying communion with the people of God. And this requires an effort by the Christian family to prepare.
It is as I would call a construction throughout the week. It is so for the pastors. We build throughout the week, preparing ourselves to be with the people of God, worship, preach and teach and everything that happens on the Lord's Day. And so, Christian families must follow a similar pattern, so to speak, they prepare themselves for Sunday to be special. Now, certain things we do not do on the Lord's Day.
We do not do the common things that we could do on Mondays and Saturdays. We do not cut grass on the Lord's Day. We do not watch TV on the Lord's Day. We try to do things that are unique and special for the Lord's Day, such as being in the Lord's house, being under the pregation of the word of God, being with his people for long periods of time, eating together with the people of God, talking about holy things, about scriptures, not about a movie, not about a sport, not about the latest news, but about pious things. These are the issues on the Lord's Day.
And what we try to do. We are not perfect at this. But it is our general goal to make Sunday special. So these are the things we try to do to make this day special, in the worship of the pious family. Practically everything that has value requires some kind of preparation.
And when you are talking about worshiping God, think about how this preparation is important. You know, there is a session in the book of psalms that is so useful to help us think about the whole issue of preparation. They are the chants of homage. And they were the chants that the families sang while they were pilgriming to present themselves before God in the temple. And they are really beautiful, but you can imagine walking happily on the road and while they were on the way to the house of God.
But this is the point of the matter. The preparation for worship always starts in the heart. It is a heart of desire. That is why David said in Psalm 27, I ask the Lord for one thing, and I will seek that I may live in the house of the Lord, every day of my life, to contemplate the beauty of the Lord and meditate in His temple. You see the desire that arises from the words of David there.
He was anxious for the Atreus of the Lord. He was anxious for the beauty of the Lord. He really believed that it was a beautiful thing to be in front of the Almighty God. Now we are always preparing ourselves for something, like human beings. All life is a preparation for Heaven, and the beginning of this preparation is desire.
So do you have this desire? Have you fed the flames of desire? By God, do you desire the Lord's attributes deeply in your heart? And do you want to lead your family? The desire to worship.
You need to desire it in your own heart. So perhaps the beginning of this whole journey of preparation had to begin with this question. Does my heart desire? And what do I need to do to warm the desires of my heart. A second thing to consider is that the whole week is a preparation to get together with the people of God.
Each worship of the Lord's Day is a general trial to be before the throne of God. So there are these things that have to do with the preparation. You prepare yourself all week to come before God, and to present yourself before God in congregation is a practice for heaven. Here is an important principle. If you love to be before Him now, and you long to be at His feet, you will probably love to be at His feet on that great day when Jesus Christ comes with all His holy angels.
And He will sit on His throne, the throne of His glory. And all who have lived will be gathered before Him. See, either you will love to be well before His throne, or you will be very uncomfortable before His throne. If you liked to be in His presence here, you will probably love being in His presence there. And that is why we must examine our hearts and question ourselves.
Do we want the Atreus of the Lord? Do We want to be in His presence. So, everything is summarized in this. Let's learn to prepare ourselves for the Atreus of the Lord. It is something very important.
If you were in front of a king, you would prepare yourself. But when we come in front of the king of kings, are we prepared, and are our families prepared, to see the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in his temple?
