In the sermon 'Guided into Christ Glorifying Truth' by Jason Dohm, the focus is on John 16:12-15, where Jesus speaks about the coming of the Holy Spirit. Our sermon text today is John 16 12 to 15 for context. I should back up to 14 verse 1 but for the sake of time I'll go back to verse 5 Jesus is speaking But now I go away to him who sent me and none of you asked me. Where are you going? But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth.

It is to your advantage that I go away. For if I do not go away, the helper will not come to you. But if I depart, I will send him to you. And when he has come, he will convict the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment, of sin, because they do not believe in me, of righteousness, because I go to my father, and you see me no more, of judgment because the ruler of this world is judged. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

However, when the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you into all truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears, He will speak, and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for he will take of what is mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are mine. Therefore I said that he will take of mine and declare it to you." The word of the Lord. Let's pray.

Oh Father, prepare our hearts, open our ears, to receive the message that You have provided for us. We pray that we will hear You clearly through Jason as he has bowed His knee to you and will now give us Your Word. We commit this time to You in the name of Jesus who is Christ. Amen. Oh, if the disciples had only known the good things in store for them, From Jesus going to His Father's side and sending the Holy Spirit, sorrow would not have filled their hearts with the things that Jesus was saying to them.

That was really the thrust of last week's text. The glories of the things that were before the Lord's people from Jesus being glorified, taking His rightful place at His Father's side and the Holy Spirit being sent to indwell His people. Jesus pressed this truth on His disciples and He taught them that He, the Holy Spirit, would convict the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment. Michael brought the Holy Spirit to us in his ministry to the world, the unbelieving world as the ministry of a prosecuting attorney. So we're filled with self-deceit wanting to tell us that we're not sinful, that we are righteous, that there won't be a judgment, at least not a judgment that threatens us.

And yet, God has sent a prosecuting attorney into this world to counteract all that self-deception in our hearts. So that men, women, and children will stand before God on that day without excuse. This week the title of the sermon is Guided into Christ Glorifying Truth. Jesus continues to teach on the sending of the Holy Spirit into the world, his person, and his work. And he's going to say in our text that he guides us into all truth.

You have a guide, a tutor, into all truth. But Jesus describes this truth. It's not truth in the general. It is characterized by truth that exalts the Lord Jesus Christ. So that is what is before us this morning.

As we go to the text, let's ask for the Lord's help. Our Father, I thank you for the treasures of your Son, Jesus. His inexhaustible treasures. I Thank you that the Holy Spirit has been sent into the world, into hearts, minds, lives of believers to disclose those treasures, to impart the treasures of the Son to his people. May we know those treasures experientially more than we ever have in our lives.

Give us a hunger and a thirst to have more of the Son's treasures, Jesus' treasures given over to us By the work of the Spirit in our lives we pray in Jesus name. Amen I'm going to begin by just looking at verse 12 by itself. So hopefully Your Bibles are still open to John chapter 16 follow along as I reread verse 12 Where Jesus says to his disciples I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. In this verse, Jesus speaks of the many things to teach which the disciples cannot yet bear. These are men who have lived with the Lord Jesus Christ day and night, heard His teaching both to multitudes and just to themselves.

For a period of three and a half years, Jesus hasn't even begun to exhaust all the truth that he has to give to them. But they can't bear it all yet. Jesus doesn't say what those things that they can't bear yet are, of course, that's the whole point. But we have an example of it in the second half of verse 4. Just gaze back to the second half of verse 4.

Jesus says, and these things I did not say to you at the beginning because I was with you. He's just talked about their excommunication from the synagogue and for many of them, their impending martyrdom that they would have to lay down their lives for the sake of their testimony of Jesus. And he didn't tell them from the beginning that they would be excommunicated from the synagogues, isolated relationally and economically from the Jewish people. He didn't tell them that many of them would have to lay down their lives for their testimony of him from the beginning. He was with them.

He was bearing the brunt of that persecution then. They weren't ready to bear those truths then so he didn't tell them from the beginning. This is an example of what he's speaking of here in verse 12. They weren't ready for those things but now when it is time he can tell them about their excommunication from the synagogue and their impending martyrdom for many of them. And there are other things they still aren't ready for.

So Jesus gives them a placeholder. He wants them to understand that there is more, much more, and that in time, at the right time, it will be revealed. But for now, it would do more harm than good for Jesus to reveal those things. They aren't ready to bear it. If He told them, it would increase their confusion.

It might increase their fear. So he holds back to tell them in the right time. Let me make three observations. Number one, It is clear from a survey of the New Testament that there were many things which were confusing before Jesus' death and resurrection, which became so much clearer after his death and resurrection. Isn't that true?

Reading through the New Testament. Many things that he even did divulge to them, but they didn't get it before his death and resurrection that made perfect sense in the light of his death and resurrection. We can attribute that to both the value of hindsight, easier looking back at things that have already happened than being told about future things. When you have the details of how it actually unfolded in history, that's easy. Somebody tells you things that are going to happen, you don't have the details of the context, that's harder.

This is true of all the prophecies of the Bible. You can look back and despise the Jews of the New Testament if you want to for not really understanding the Messianic prophecies. Well, easy for you to say. It's hindsight. It's the rear view mirror for you.

It was the windshield from them. They were looking out into a very cloudy future with things that God said that were true, but they hadn't happened yet. They didn't have the context and the details. So they have the value of hindsight after the death and resurrection and to Pentecost. I think both of those things come to bear.

They're going to be things that are going to be easier understood after the death and resurrection, but also don't discount Pentecost. What is Pentecost? Pentecost is the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit in a new way, in a more comprehensive way than the Holy Spirit has ever, had ever, been experienced by the people of God to that point. He now comes and indwells. He's not coming and going as we see in the New Testament.

He's coming and making His abode in the hearts, minds, lives of His people. That's going to help them bear the truth that Jesus is not going to teach them on the eve of his crucifixion. And so Jesus delayed his instruction about many things until after his death and resurrection and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Number two. Consider Acts chapter one verse three.

In Acts chapter one verse three Jesus Consider Acts chapter 1 verse 3. In Acts chapter 1 verse 3, Jesus is speaking, or Luke, the writer of Acts, is Speaking of Jesus appearing to his disciples after his resurrection, he says this, Acts chapter 1 verse 3, to whom he, Jesus, also presented himself alive after his suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. Jesus says on the eve of his crucifixion, there are many things that you can't bear, many things to tell you that you cannot bear, keep in mind in a week, less than a week, half a week, he's going to begin appearing to them over the course of forty days and speaking to them of things pertaining to the kingdom. So as we march through this week's text, it's going to be clear that the primary sense of this is the Holy Spirit will continue Jesus' teaching ministry but also keep in mind that He's not done actually being present with them to teach over the course of forty days, not once or twice, but many times over the course of forty days, there will be face to face, face to resurrected face, teaching about things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

Number three. Number three. This concept, holding back things that can't be born yet, is found in the Bible before Jesus, and Jesus teaches it, and it's found after Jesus. So while a wonderful truth is being given to us, it is Isaiah 28 verses 9 and 10. Isaiah 28, 9 and 10.

Whom will he teach knowledge? And whom will he make to understand the message? Those just weaned from milk. Those just drawn from the breast. Now leading up to this he's talking about drunken priests and prophets.

So he's saying, who can even understand the truths that God has for his people when you have drunken prophets and priests? Should we teach the babies? Verse 10. For precept must be upon precept. Precept upon precept.

Line upon line. Line upon line. Here a little, there a little. They're a little. Knowledge builds cumulatively.

You build knowledge. Not all truths are elementary and basic. Not all truths form the foundation. There are foundational truths upon which you build. Some things to be known draw upon pre-established understanding.

And if you don't have the pre-established understanding, if you don't have the foundation, those truths are worthless to you. Try starting to build a building in the middle. How do you do that? You build on thin air? So to teach truths that depend upon, rest upon, pre-established understanding to impart those truths before the foundation is laid is folly.

Jesus won't engage in folly. Listen to Mark chapter 4 verses 10 and 33. Mark chapter 4 verse 10, but when he, Jesus, was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parable. So Leading up to that, Jesus has been with the multitude, now the multitude is gone and Jesus is just with the twelve and some others. He's with an inner circle and they're asking him about a parable that he just taught.

Now listen to verse 33, Mark 4.33. And with many such parables, He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it He spoke about subjects And in a way that they were able to hear. The implication being, there would be subjects that they would not be able to hear. There would be ways of communicating the truth that they wouldn't be ready to take up the truth. He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it.

So this isn't new the night before Jesus died. Jesus has been saying what was needful at the time and withholding other things that required a pre-existing understanding. All along he's been doing that. Listen to Paul in 1 Corinthians 3 verse 2. 1 Corinthians 3 verse 2.

Paul speaks of his early days in Corinth. I fed you with milk and not with solid food For until now you were not able to receive it. And even now you are still not able. Paul writes to the Corinthians, just like Jesus, there are many more things to teach you, you are not able to bear it. Still milk, not ready for solid food.

We should praise God that we are the disciples of a disciple maker that knows exactly where we are and what we need. And what will be helpful to tell us now and what will be helpful to withhold from us now. Jesus is withholding some truths from you that you're not ready to bear yet. You don't have the pre-established understanding that will make it helpful when he imparts it to you at the right time. Praise God he doesn't just come and dump the library on you when you're not even ready for three quarters of it.

He brings you along gently with perfect understanding of what will help you, what you need, sparing you of the things that would confuse and terrify you. There are truths that would confuse you and terrify you, and Jesus is withholding them from you because he is a wise disciple maker. Praise God. Back to our text. Verse 13.

Verse 13. Now Jesus says this in verse 13. However, when he the Spirit of truth has come, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will tell you things to come." In this verse, we have the Holy Spirit as an indwelling guide into all truth. If you're taking notes on the handout, filling in blanks, indwelling fills in the blank.

The Holy Spirit as an indwelling guide into all truth. If you're failing a class, you can't understand the material that's being taught, what do you need? A tutor! Someone who can come alongside you and give you individual help. It's not working.

The teacher at the front of the class teaching 30 isn't getting through to you. What do you need? Individual attention. A tutor. It's what every student does.

God has given you an indwelling tutor, individual attention. The verse begins with, however, Jesus is drawing a contrast. Many things you are not ready to bear now However, I am sending the Spirit of truth to guide you into all truth I don't have to tell you everything tonight even though I'm dying tomorrow because I'm sending my Spirit who will continue my teaching ministry, my revelation of truth ministry. Jesus again calls the Holy Spirit a He. He is a person, not an impersonal force.

Jesus again calls the Holy Spirit the Spirit of Truth. Holy Spirit is in the truth business. He is the Spirit of Truth. Let's review together again the things Jesus has been saying about the Holy Spirit. Just turn back one page to chapter 14 verses 16 and 17.

John chapter 14 verses 16 and 17. Jesus says, and I will pray the Father, I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper that He may abide with you forever. The Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him, but you know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." This is pre-Pentecost, now we don't have to have future tense, will be in you, is in you to Christians after Pentecost. So Jesus here describes the Holy Spirit as the helper. He is the one sent alongside to help you.

He is your tutor. He is the Spirit of Truth. He dwells with you and will be in you. When you are in a class of 30, you are having a hard time acquiring the content. You have individual help from the Holy Spirit.

Down in verse 26, still in chapter 14, verse 26, Jesus says, But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." So you already see the theme. He's alongside to help. He is the Spirit of truth. The Spirit is in the truth business. He will teach you all things and bring to remembrance the things that you've forgotten that Jesus said.

That's His job. He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that Jesus said to you. Look at the breath of the Holy Spirit's function in the life of the believer to teach all things, to bring to remembrance all things. Chapter 15 verses 26 and 27, the very end of chapter 15 verses 26 and 27, Jesus says, but when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of me. And you will also bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.

So the Holy Spirit is a helper, He's a Spirit of Truth, he testifies of Jesus. Now Jesus is beginning to home in on, narrow, the things that we can expect the Holy Spirit to impart to us. He testifies of God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. And you will too. You'll testify of Him too.

By the way, that's not coincidental. Those things are connected. An indwelling Spirit is testifying of Christ and giving you a testimony to the world of Christ. Now Jesus in our text says he will guide you into all truth. We have an indwelling guide, a tutor, individual help.

Guide, a tutor, individual help in a world of deception and self-deception. You don't need even external sources of deception. You have your own set in your heart. That's what the Bible teaches. And falsehood, we have an indwelling God into all truth.

He who is within you is greater than he who is in the world and even the corruptions of your heart This is a glorious truth, But we can't get stupid about it. This is not a promise that the Holy Spirit will whisper all sorts of new revelation to you in every quiet time. To make it into that is to isolate it from the previous verses, which speak of his role to bring to remembrance the thing that Jesus said and to testify of Jesus. And the following verses, where Jesus explicitly says it is the role of the Spirit to take from what is Jesus' to glorify Jesus. Try this question on for size.

It's a very revealing question. I think it really helps us think rightly about what Jesus is saying and isn't saying about the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Here's the question. How does this relate to 2 Timothy 3, 16 and 17. Jesus is teaching truth.

The Holy Spirit is going to be sent into the heart, mind, lives of believers to guide us into all truth. How does that relate to 2 Timothy 3, 16 and 17. You are very familiar. All scripture is given by inspiration of God. So now we're not talking about the Spirit, we're talking about the Bible.

And is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. I want to give you this proposition. If I think that based on today's text, the Holy Spirit is going to give me something outside of scripture to complete me and make me more equipped, I don't understand this week's text. Let me give you the proposition again. I think that based on today's text Spirit guides you into all truth the Holy Spirit is going to give me something outside of Scripture to complete me and make me more equipped than Scripture can make me.

I don't understand this week's text. For our text to be true, the words of Jesus in John 16 to be true, and 2 Timothy 3, 16 and 17 to be true, there must be an inner relationship between the Bible, Scripture, which is breathed out by God, and the Holy Spirit, which is given to indwell the believer and guide the believer into all truth, there must be an inner relationship for both of these texts to be true. The person of God, 2 Timothy 3, 17 says that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped. That word, anthropos, is not gender specific at all. So, a person of God is a weird phrase, but it's actually much more literal and helpful.

It's not talking about men, it's talking about people. The person that belongs to God may be complete. The believer. That person of God, in verse 17, is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. If you're not indwelt by the Holy Spirit, you're not a person of God.

You don't belong to God. People who belong to God, by faith, Jesus has sent his spirit to indwell so this bringing these together preserves the place of the Holy Spirit indispensable essential how do we know that Because unbelievers read the same words in the same book and don't profit at all. Happens every day. It's happening in churches all across the world. Right this minute it's happening.

Hearing the same words from the same book and not profiting at all the Holy Spirit's place is indispensable essential and preserves the place of the Bible. After Pentecost, the Word of God is not to just be cast aside as unnecessary. It is able to make the believer complete and thoroughly equipped for every good word. How do you think it can be that the Word of God is living and active? That's what it's called in Hebrews 412.

How is it living and active? To people who have been made alive spiritually, it's living and active. To people who have an indwelling tutor, where when the hard truths are not penetrating, You have an indwelling guide into all truth. Jesus says, he will not speak on his own. The Holy Spirit will not speak on his own.

Our translation goes on to say he will not speak on his own authority. If you have a Bible that renders added words in italics, authority is in italics. The King James just renders it of his own. And it's better in the sense that they haven't added a word. It's fine, it's a fine translation, but the point is, not that the Holy Spirit doesn't have any authority, the point is he doesn't speak on his own.

Just as Jesus has said over and over and over again in the Gospel of John that he was sent from his Father and did not speak on his own, just so the Spirit is sent and does not speak on His own. The point being that the Holy Spirit is on a unified divine mission. The point is not that the Holy Spirit doesn't have authority. He is God. He is an equal member of the Trinity, of the same essence of Father and Son.

The point is that the Holy Spirit is on a unified divine mission. He doesn't have a separate will, a separate mission. He is sent and what he is given to speak he discloses and what he hears he speaks. But don't think of the Holy Spirit as just an errand boy. He is speaking what he's been given to speak.

He is speaking what he hears. He is not just an errand boy. Think in terms of divine simplicity. Divine simplicity, I brought it up a couple of times, but it's essentially the theological doctrine that Father, Son, and Spirit have one will. Not three wills that happen to jive together well.

One will. Three persons, one God. One will. The Spirit doesn't desire some things and the Father another set of things. Finally Jesus says, and he will tell you things to come.

John the Gospel writer is a perfect example of the fulfillment of this. The Holy Spirit will tell you of things to come. John is not just the Gospel writer or the letter writer for 2nd and 3rd John. He is also the author of what? Revelation.

Revelation is thoroughly about future things. In 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, The Apostle Paul speaks of future things by the Spirit. Where did he get that? It's the Holy Spirit telling him of things to come. In 2 Peter, the Apostle Peter speaks of future things by the Spirit.

Where did he get those things? The Holy Spirit revealed to him things to come. In Acts, there is a prophet named Agabus who only shows up a couple of times. One time he says, there is getting ready to be a terrible famine in Jerusalem. And the church outside of Israel actually mobilizes support based on this prophecy and sends help to the believers in Jerusalem when this famine comes.

He shows up later and tells Paul, the man who is bound by this belt, he binds Paul's hands with his own belt, he says, the man whose hands are bound is going to be bound in Jerusalem. And then they beg Paul not to go to Jerusalem. Agabus had revelations of the Spirit of things to come. By the way, let me re-say something that I've said a couple of times as we've been studying the Holy Spirit. Jesus' teaching to these eleven men about the Holy Spirit.

Jesus spoke this directly to eleven specific disciples. To eleven specific disciples. It is true that these things were fulfilled in these men who had those voice waves, sound waves hit their own individual eardrums in a particular way. Jesus' sound waves, the sound waves of his voice didn't hit my ear drums. I have it in Scripture.

He wasn't speaking directly to me. And it is also true that these eleven men are representative of all disciples. And as a disciple, I have a claim on this truth. You want a claim on this truth? I want a claim on this truth.

That I get a tutor, individual help, to understand truth. Only, it isn't a warrant to turn myself into an apostle in the application. Are you with me? John 16 isn't a warrant to turn yourself into an apostle. The application would be exactly the same for me.

So for instance, praise God that you have a word by word inspired gospel. A gospel you can bet your life on, a gospel you can build your life on. They didn't get a paraphrase from heaven and relate the thought to you. God picked those words and gave them with precision a gospel that you can bet your life on and build your life on. Praise God we have it.

And know that you also, believer, Have an indwelling guide into all truth. Only don't expect the right scripture. The canon is closed. People of God have believed that for 2, 000 years. The canon is closed.

So it's true for them, and it's true for you, and the application for an apostle is different. Isaiah 55 read today, God's thoughts higher than our thoughts. How much higher as the heavens are above the earth? Have you liked that for a chasm? God's ways higher than our ways.

How much higher? As high as the heavens are above the earth. What a chasm. Better have a tutor. Better have some individual instruction not to just get left with the books.

The truths of it are as high above you as the heavens are above the earth. God has given us that help. God has given us that help. Praise God for what Jesus is teaching here, and that it's true. Verses 14 and 15.

Jesus continues, He, the Holy Spirit, will glorify me, for He will take of what is mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are mine. Therefore, I said, he will take of mine and declare it to you." In this verse, the point of this truth, these two verses, the point of this truth disclosure is to glorify Jesus. So if you're taking notes on the handout, filling in blanks, glorify fills in the blank. The point of this truth disclosure from the Holy Spirit is to glorify Jesus.

This is not trivial pursuit. This is the Holy Spirit sent to testify of Jesus, to reveal Jesus to His people. The basis of this is Jesus' boundless treasure trove of truth. So the Holy Spirit is taking out of something. What is that?

It's Jesus' boundless treasure trove of truth. The first draft said to take from his treasure chest. Woefully inadequate. I can set a treasure chest on this lectern. We should be envisioning gold and jewels in every direction as far as the eye can see.

He is God of this universe. There's nothing that can be known that he doesn't know. All truth is his truth. It is a boundless treasure trove that the Spirit takes of to impart to Jesus' people. Listen to John chapter 1.

John started the Gospel this way. His Gospel this way. John chapter 1, just listen to John 1, 16-18. And of His fullness, of Jesus' fullness, we have all received and Grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. Of His fullness, of Jesus' fullness, we have all received. Truth came through Jesus. Think about how much truth came through Moses.

A lot of truth. John contrasts it. The law came through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus. Jesus has so much more truth than just the truths that Moses delivered that John actually used him as a contrast point. The law is nothing compared to the revelation of truth in and through Jesus Christ.

He is the image of the invisible God. Chapter 14 verse 6, Jesus says, I am the truth. Right, We memorize that. I am the way, the truth, and the life. Jesus doesn't tell the truth.

He is the truth. He is the embodiment of All truth. These boundless treasures of truth and revelation are mine, says Jesus. Here in our text. These boundless treasures of truth and revelation are my boundless treasures.

I own them. The Spirit takes of them to give to my blood-bought people. It is the assigned privilege of the Holy Spirit to draw out of those treasures and to declare them to Jesus' blood-bought people in order to glorify Him, the assigned privilege. So the Holy Spirit, again, not an errand boy. He has an assigned privilege.

Like we said of Jesus earlier, Jesus is not simply the errand boy from heaven. He is given the honor to save His people. It is His assigned honor to take on flesh and to die to purchase a people and reconcile them to his Father. So the Holy Spirit has the assigned honor to draw out of Christ's boundless treasures and to give them to His people at the right time as Christ gives the truth at the right time. So the Spirit draws out of those treasures and gives it at the right time to the right person in order to glorify Christ for the exaltation of Jesus.

So this would lead us to think that Primarily these are things about Jesus, all that he is to his people. I don't think we have to strictly limit it to that, but definitely the thrust is truths that teach us about all that Jesus is to us. The grand purpose of the Holy Spirit's truth declarations into the hearts and minds and lives of believers is the exaltation of their Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. That's what he is after. That's the grand purpose.

Why is the Holy Spirit speaking into your heart and mind and life to exalt the Son of God, the Savior? Listen to Paul in 1 Corinthians 2 verse 12. This is Paul writing to the Corinthians, 1 Corinthians 2 verse 12. Paul says this, Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. Let me read that again.

This is just what Jesus is talking about. First Corinthians 2.12. Now we have received not the Spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God. That, we have received the Spirit so that for the purpose of, That we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. There's the Holy Spirit indwelling you, communicating to you day by day the things that you need.

The things that have been freely given to you by God. How can you live in this sin-sick world without an ongoing reminder of all the things that have been freely given to you by God. Those things come to you, they are mediated to you through Jesus. In other words, no Jesus, none of these things come to you because you're his enemy. These are the things of Christ that the Holy Spirit draws from to impart to you.

The things that have been freely given to you by God. Paul says the same thing. Holy Spirit has been sent to you to impart to you the things that have been freely given to you by God so that you're not thinking you're poor when you're rich. Believers you're rich. The Holy Spirit lives inside of you to convince you, even in this sin-sick world, where you got all these troubles and even indwelling corruptions, remaining corruptions that are being purified so slowly in your life, you know what?

You're rich. You're rich. So the Holy Spirit's grand purpose is not to speak audibly to you to tell you to take this job or not take that job. To marry this woman or not marry this woman. I'm not saying that the Holy Spirit never leads believers.

I believe I've been led by the Holy Spirit. I believe, looking back, that there were times where I thought I was being led by the Spirit, and I wasn't being led by the Spirit at all. So be careful with this. I'm saying when we start here, the Holy Spirit's job is to tell me whether to take this job or not, we're starting in the wrong place. We're off track.

I'm saying A ministry which is focused on the gifts of the Holy Spirit is inherently off track. But a ministry which is focused on the purpose of the Holy Spirit to exalt Christ is inherently on track. When you study the gifts of the Spirit in Acts, it was for that purpose. Those things were happening, those wonders were being worked to solidify and authenticate the preaching of Christ. That's why the wonders are happening in Acts, to authenticate the preaching of Christ.

They are not an end to themselves, they are an end to glorify Jesus. Just what he is saying here. The Holy Spirit wants to take from Jesus' boundless treasure trove and impart them to Jesus' blood-bought people. And when we offend the Spirit, grieve the Spirit, quench the Spirit, because of carelessness or stubborn disobedience, think of what we forfeit. Think of what you are choking off when you grieve, offend, quench the Spirit because of carelessness in your life or stubborn disobedience.

The Holy Spirit is there to draw out of the boundless treasure trove that belongs to Jesus and impart it to you, but You make him unwilling to bless you in that way. Because of your carelessness and your stubborn disobedience. Think of what we forfeit. For what? For a cheap thrill.

It wasn't as cheap as you thought. It was so much more costly than we thought. You're left with nothing. Finally, verse 15, what Jesus says makes it crystal clear that this truth does not in any way diminish the glory of the Father or unduly elevate the Son. Look at verse 15, his final verse.

Verse 15. Jesus says, All things that the Father has are mine. Therefore I said that he will take of mine and declare it to you." God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit are jealous for each other's glory, not of each other's glory. I'll say that again because it's really important. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, the three persons of the Trinity are jealous for each other's glory.

The Father wants to make sure that the Son receives glory, and The Son wants to make sure that the Son receives glory. And the Son wants to make sure that the Father receives glory. The Spirit wants to make sure that the Son is exalted. They are jealous for each other's glory, not of each other's glory. Three persons, one God, one will, one heart of sinners.

Shared treasures. Shared glory. These two verses should make us so happy. Shouldn't your Savior be exalted? Can you live in a world Where a God who left heaven to lay down His life to bleed and die on the cross, is it receiving glory?

Heaven save us from such a world! Where God leaves heaven to die for me and no one knows of the goodness of it. No, God has planned that he would receive an inheritance of nations for his work, so that he would be exalted. The Holy Spirit has been sent to press that truth on the world. He's not going to leave the world alone, Because people have to see what Christ has done for sinners.

It's the Holy Spirit's job to take out of that treasure trove and impart it. Three applications. Number one, be patient with those who only have the elementary basic truths. You know what? You can be saved with the elementary and basic truths.

You can only be saved with the elementary and basic truths. Don't despise anyone just because that's all they have. Jesus didn't despise His disciples even though there were all these things that They needed to know. They couldn't even bear them. He couldn't even teach them.

He has 24 more hours face to face before His crucifixion. And He has to hold His peace because they're not ready for those truths. Jesus didn't despise them for that. Number two. And we shouldn't either.

Foundational truths are saving truths. Two, Where it is your responsibility, eagerly build precept upon precept and line upon line. A lot of places it's not your responsibility. But where it's your responsibility, eagerly build precept on precept. In other words, you don't despise those who have elementary truths, but where you have responsibility, you don't want to be content with that.

You want to leave them there. You have a bare responsibility. If you know truths to be built on the foundation, to build them, to lay, precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little, there a little. Isaiah 28, isn't that wonderful? Hear a little, there a little.

Number three, finally, just listen to Luke 11, 10-13. Luke 11, 10-13. Everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks, it will be opened.

If a son asks for bread from any father among you, Will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?

This is unique in Luke. In other places it doesn't go right to the Holy Spirit. In Luke, my guess is Jesus said a similar thing at a different time. He says, how much more will your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him? He's daring you to ask God the Father for the Holy Spirit.

He's saying, you evil people, you get asked for something reasonable from your children, you don't give them the opposite. How much more will God be predisposed to give good things to His children? Nothing better than the Holy Spirit. What would it be to have more of Jesus' boundless treasure trove imparted to you? Let's find out.

Let's find out. Let's ask for more of the Holy Spirit. That's His job. Draw out of Jesus' boundless treasure trove and give it to you. Now here in Luke 11, Jesus is saying, ask for more of the Spirit.

You'll get more of the Spirit. We want to start our prayers just right there. God, give us more of the Spirit. Give us more of the ministry of the Spirit. Give us more of His testimony of Jesus.

Give us more of His teaching us all things, reminding us of all the things that Jesus said. Give us more of Him telling us all the things that are freely given to us. You are a Father predisposed to answer your children favorably. You dare us to ask for more of the Holy Spirit to test you in it. We ask you now, please pour out your Spirit among us.

Let your Spirit's ministry thrive, thrive in our hearts, in our homes, in this church. Please send your spirit upon us, O God. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
