In the sermon titled 'Of God and the Holy Trinity, 1689, SLBC, Chap. 2, Par. 1' by Eric Bechler, the focus is on the attributes of God as outlined in the London Baptist Confession. The sermon emphasizes the scriptural basis for understanding God's attributes, highlighting His singularity, immutability, and incomprehensibility. The speaker references numerous biblical passages to underscore God's nature as a living and true God, infinite in being and perfection, a pure spirit without body or parts, invisible, eternal, and immense. God's attributes of omnipotence, holiness, wisdom, freedom, and absolute sovereignty are explored, alongside His roles as the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him and as a just and merciful judge. The sermon concludes by acknowledging the mystery and majesty of God, urging the congregation to worship Him wholeheartedly.
Chapter 2 of the London Baptist Confession for the next three weeks focuses on God and the Holy Trinity. It's presented in three paragraphs that I'll summarize this way. The first one today, the attributes of God. The second one, the self-sufficiency of God. And finally, the Holy Trinity.
Our focus this morning is on the attributes of God, which is a humongous topic. Many books have been written on this topic, and the men of the church studied A.W. Pink's book on the attributes of God a few years ago. It's an excellent book to read and meditate on, especially if you've never gone through it. Today we'll go through it pretty quickly, not commenting much, but just going through a lot of verses.
Today there's really just a lot of verses that I'll read. But I wanted to do that just so that we can appreciate the attributes that we're going to go through here are those that are properly supported by Scripture. They're not attributes that we come up with with our own ideas, but directly from Scripture. So let's begin. The Lord our God is but one only.
From Deuteronomy 6, 4, Colt and Red, Hear O Israel, the Lord thy God is one Lord. From 2nd Samuel 7, 22, Wherefore thou art great, O Lord God, for there is none like Thee, neither is there any God besides Thee." In 1 Corinthians chapter 8 we have, as concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one." And in verse 6 from the same passages, but to us there is but one God, the Father of whom all things, and we in Him, and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by Him. Finishing that first phrase, the Lord our God is but one only living and true God. Focusing on living and true God from 1st Thessalonians 1 9, for they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God and from Jeremiah 10 10 but the Lord is the true God he is the living God and an everlasting King it is wrath the earth shall tremble in the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.
Continuing, his subsistence is in and of himself infinite in being and perfection. We go back to 1 Kings 8.27, but will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this house which I have built. And in Job 11, seven through nine, canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
It is as high as heaven, and what canst thou do? Deeper than hell, what canst thou know? The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the seas. Whose essence cannot be comprehended by any but himself. From Job 26-14, Lo, these parts are of his ways, but how little a portion is heard of him, but the thunder of his power who can understand?
In Romans 11, 33-34, O the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways, past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord, or who hath been his counselor." And finally in 1st Corinthians 2 11, for what man knoweth the things of a man save the spirit of man which is in him. Even so the things of God knoweth no man but the Spirit of God. God who is a most pure Spirit from John 4 24 God is a Spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and truth who is invisible.
1st Timothy 1 17 now unto the King eternal immortal invisible the only wise God be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. Colossians 1.15. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation, who is without body, parts. Deuteronomy 4.15-16.
Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves, for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire, lest ye corrupt yourselves and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female. And in John 1, 18, no one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him. That was who is without body parts or who is without passion. In Acts 14, 15 and saying, "'Sirs, why do ye these things?
We are also men of like passions with you and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven and earth and the sea and all things that are therein. In Romans 7-5, for while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. Who only hath immortality dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto. We go to 1st Timothy 6 16. Who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see.
To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. In 1st Timothy 1 17 we read before but now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. Who is immutable?
James 1 17. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Malachi 3.6, for I am the Lord, I change not. Therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Who is immense?
First Kings 8.27, But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee, How much less this house that I have builded. Jeremiah 23, verses 23 and 24, Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in a secret places that I shall not see him, saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth, saith the Lord.
Who is eternal? Psalm 90 verse 2, Before the mountains were brought forth, and ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. 1st Timothy 1, 17, again, now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. Who is incomprehensible?
Psalm 145 verse 3, great is the Lord and greatly to be praised. His greatness is unsearchable. Go to Ecclesiastes 3.11, he hath made everything beautiful in his time. Also he hath set the world in their heart so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to end. Isaiah 55, 8 and 9, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Who is almighty? Genesis 17 1. And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram and said unto him, I am the Almighty. Walk before me and be thou perfect.
We go to Revelations 4 8. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him, and they were full of eyes within, and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, which was and is and is to come. Who is in every way infinite? Revelation 1 8. I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God.
Who is and who was and who is to come? The Almighty. Revelation 4 8. Even under his wings, day and night, they never stopped saying, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come. We repeated that.
Who is most holy? Isaiah 6-3, And one cried unto another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of his glory. And 1 Samuel 2-2, There is none holy like the Lord, There is none beside you, There is no rock like our God. And who is most wise? Romans 16, 27, To God only wise be glory through Jesus Christ forever.
Amen. And 1st Timothy 1, 17, Now unto King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. Who is most free? When God is not a slave to anyone or to anything, he is sovereign.
We'll go to Psalm 115, but our God is in the heavens. He hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. Who is most absolute? In Exodus 3 14 God said unto Moses, I am that I am, and he said, thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I am hath sent me unto you. In Job 23 13, but he is in one mind, and who can turn him, and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth, who is working all things according to the counsel of his own immutable and most righteous will.
Ephesians 1, 11, in whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will. Romans 8, 28, And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose. And Daniel 4 35. And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing, and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth, and none can stay his hand or say to him, What doest thou? Who is working all things for his own glory?
Proverbs 16, 4, The Lord hath made all things for himself, yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. Romans 11 36 for of him and through him and to him are all things to whom be glory forever. Amen. 1st John 4, 8, He that loveth not knoweth not God, for God is love. 1st John 4, 16, And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us, God is love.
And he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Who is most gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression and sin. From Exodus 34.6. And the Lord passed by before him and proclaimed the Lord the Lord God merciful and gracious long suffering and abundant in goodness and truth and in verse 7 keeping mercy for thousands for giving iniquity and transgression and sin and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. Who is the rewarder of them that diligently seek him?
Hebrews 11 6, but without faith it is impossible to please him, for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. Jeremiah 29, 13, and he shall seek me and find me when ye shall search me with all your heart. Matthew 5, 12, rejoice and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so persecuted they that the prophets which were before you. Who is with all most just and terrible in his judgments from Nehemiah 9 32 and 33 now therefore our God the great the mighty and the terrible God who keep his covenant and mercy let not all the trouble seem little before Thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and all Thy people. Since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day, how might thou art just in all that is brought upon us?
For thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly." Malachi 4 verses 1 & 2, for behold the day cometh that shall burn as an oven, and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly shall be stubble. And the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. But unto you that fear my name shall the son of righteousness arise with healing in his wings, and he shall go forth and grow up as calves of the stall. Who is hating all sin? Psalm 5 verses 5 and 6.
The foolish shall not stand in thy sight. Thou hatest all workers of iniquity, and thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing. The Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man." Psalm 11 verse 5, the Lord tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence. Finally who will by no means clear the guilty from Nahum chapter 1 verses 2 & 3. God is jealous and the Lord revenge us the Lord revenge us and is furious.
The Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. The Lord hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. In Exodus 34, 7, which I just previously read, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and upon the children's children unto the third and to the fourth generation. Well, praise God that our God is the one and only true living God.
Our God hears our prayers. He intervenes in our lives on a daily basis. We are his people. We are the sheep of his pasture. God protects us as under eagles wings.
God chastises us because He loves us and wants to restore us. He is ever patient, He's ever loving, He's eternal from everlasting to everlasting. He is the Alpha and Omega. He is almighty. And there is a day coming where every knee will bow before the Lord.
And God is all wise, and God is holy. We can't comprehend all of these attributes of God, but those that we've discussed today are some of what God has so graciously revealed to us in His holy word. Our God is an awesome God. Let us praise Him and worship Him with all our hearts, all our mind, and all our strength. Amen.
