Where did you come from? Where did I come from? Those are legitimate questions, aren't they? Was Adam Your ancestor? Or did you come from a chimpanzee?

Was your grandpa a monkey? Did your ancestors crawl out of a pond somewhere billions of years ago and then after processes and changes and mutations and random chances? Is that how we got here? Is the Bible true or is evolution? These are questions that men, women, boys and girls ask.

In our studies of Genesis, we've looked at the first five days of the creation week. We've seen how that it is, it was a literal week. And so now we come to day six. More details are given about this day than any others. In fact, in Genesis chapter 1 verses 24 through 31, This will be our text, but this gives us part of the information, and in chapter 2 will give us more information.

And we won't be in chapter 2 today, but Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 are not two different accounts. Rather, they are the same account, just broken down into more details. And so let's go ahead and jump into the text there. In your copy of God's word, we'll begin reading verse 24. Then God said, let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind.

Cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind. And it was so. God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing of the ground after its kind. God saw that it was good. Then God said, let us make man in our image according to our likeness so that they will have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle Over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth God created man in his own image The image of God he created him male and female he created them God blessed them and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.

Have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that creeps on the earth. Then God said, Behold, I have given to you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth and every tree which has the fruit of the tree yielding seed. It shall be food for you. Every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that creeps on the earth which has life I have given every green plant for food. It was so.

God saw all that he had made, behold it was very good, and there was evening, and there was morning, the sixth day. Day. This is the breakdown of chapter 1, reading verses 24 through 31 of the sixth day. As As we look at this text, we find, first of all, that in verses 24 and 25, We learn that the land animals are created on day six. Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind, cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind.

And it was so. God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, the cattle after their kind, and creeping thing of the ground after its kind, and God saw that it was good. So the land animals are made, and in Genesis chapter one they're broken down into three groups. The first group being cattle. Cattle would include all the animals that can be domesticated.

So cows, sheep, goats, those sorts of things. Creeping things refers to all animals that live and crawl close to the ground. Over in Leviticus, Leviticus chapter 11, go over there with me. Verses 29 through 31, look here what it says. Now these are to you the unclean among the swarming things which swarm on the earth, the mole and the mouse and the great lizard in its kinds, the gecko and the crocodile and the lizard and the sand reptile and the chameleon.

These are to you the unclean among all the swarming things. Whoever touches them when they're dead becomes unclean until evening." And so there were certain animals that the Israelites were not able to eat and so on and so forth. They were unclean according to the law here. When we look at the creation, There were creeping things. These are the things that live and crawl close to the ground.

Usually those creeping things are the things that we don't really like too much. But they are all part of God's creation. We should be thankful for them. Maybe not so much when they get into the house. Obviously in Ohio we used to have the big old wolf spiders that would get in into the basement.

And here, We would have a lot of different bugs that get in, like palmetto bugs and stuff like that, but we have someone that comes and sprays to keep them out. But occasionally we get lizards, little lizards that come in here, the little anoles. The little anoles and as hard as me and the kids try to catch them, they usually disappear until some weeks later we find just a little lizard skeleton somewhere in the house. But the creeping things, the creeping things. But then he also mentions beasts of the earth.

This would refer to the wild animals of all sorts. Wild animals. Essentially what's happening here is God is creating all of the land animals of all sorts. And yes, yes, yes, that would include the dinosaurs. The dinosaurs were made on day six, the same very same day, same 24 hour period that man was made.

In fact, over in the book of Job, Job chapter 40, there's a very ancient I'm booking your Bible, although you have to go into the Old Testament, but Job is older, written older, before written before Genesis really Job chapter 40 obviously the events of Genesis happened before Job, but Job is an older book, and in Job chapter 40, And all the way into verse 15. Now last time we looked at Leviathan, Leviathan here in in in in Job chapter 40, but let's look at verse 15, going down to verse 24. It says, Behold now behemoth, which I made along with you. Keep that in mind. He says, behold now behemoth which I made along with you, it eats grass like an ox, behold now its power in its loins, and its vigor in the muscles of its belly.

Hangs its tail like a cedar, the sinews of its thighs are knit together, its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs are like bars of iron. It is the first of the ways of God. Let its maker bring near its sword. Surely the mountains bring its food, and all the beasts of the field play there. Under the lotus plants it lies down in the hidden place of the reeds and the marsh the lotus plants cover it with shade the willows of the brooks surround it if a river oppresses it is not alarmed it is secure Though the Jordan bursts forth to its mouth, can anyone capture it before its eyes?

With snares, can anyone pierce its nose? And so this behemoth, behemoth is a transliteration, it's a Hebrew word, It's written out in English here. And the translators, when they come to this, they said, well, we're not sure what kind of animal it is. As a matter of fact, Hebrew, a lot of times there's uncertainty about some of the animals from time to time when you're dealing with ancient Hebrew, but with this one they say, well I'm not sure what this is. The commentators are torn too.

The commentators a lot of times they'll say, well this is an elephant or a hippopotamus. But that doesn't seem to fit at all. As a matter of fact, in the description, in the description, that God gives us in His Word, it says that the behemoth, that it was eating grass like an ox. Well, yeah, the elephant and the hippo, they eat grass like an ox, but then it says that it hangs its tail like a cedar. If you ever go to a zoo or if you make it to Africa or Asia and you look at the hippopotamus or the elephant you'll know that they don't have a tail that is like a cedar tree.

It just doesn't fit. In fact this was a mighty creature. It had bones like tubes of bronze or bars of iron. What could it be? Well, in the description, it was an animal that Job knew, something that you and I, we haven't seen alive, but it must have been an extinct animal, a dinosaur, perhaps a sauropod, created on the same day as man.

Indeed, all over the earth, all over the earth, every continent, where there were people, there are legends. Legends of dragons. So, well, dragons aren't dinosaurs. Well, dinosaur is a newer word. It was invented in 1841.

And so, these legends, these dragon legends, they are memories that got passed down through the years from people and their ancestries and their tribal discussions and all of that sort of thing, but they're recorded right here in God's Word and we find that collaborated all over the earth. And so the fossil record and all that, you know, they don't have the, they don't have a date on them. And so when man pulls out a fossil and they say, oh this is billions of years old, they're going off of their assumption based off of what they think is true. As I've said before, it's not faith versus science when we look at God's Word versus what they teach in school. It's faith versus faith.

And it's faith in God or faith in man. Because man was not there. And so we're either gonna believe a story that man told or we're gonna believe what God has said. And God has given us in his word, he is the eyewitness. He was the eyewitness account.

He told us what happened and he says on day six that he made all of these creatures with man. Whatever you dig up in the fossil record, It didn't come millions and billions of years before man Came the same the same day And exactly as he said Indeed when we look at the created order, he set things in motion. At this text in Genesis 1-24, he says that God said, let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind, cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind. And it was so. God made The beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, every creeping thing of the ground after its kind.

God saw that it was good. So no less than five times is it repeated here that they reproduced after their kind. A rule that's put into motion, in fact a rule that we see happening even today. Like begets like. Cows will always have baby cows.

Worms, they always have worms. Lizards always have lizards. Frogs always have frogs. Wolves always produce wolves. Now there may be variations in the kind.

For instance, for instance when you look at a wolf and you look at Isaiah's dog, whatever it is, what is your dog, do you know? It's a dog, right? And you look at a poodle or a chihuahua. Grandma Elsie had a chihuahua, and you know, they're all dogs. Even though a chihuahua is kind of a poor excuse of a dog, It's still a dog, right?

And so there are variations within the dog kind. Sorry, Elsie, I know you listen to my sermons, but there are variations within the dog kind. From the great St. Bernard all the way down to the teacup dogs. A dog never becomes a cat.

A monkey never becomes a man. A dinosaur never became a chicken. Charles Darwin supposed that there were transitional fossils and all this sort of thing that were yet to be found and still the so-called missing links are missing. Why is that? Because they don't exist.

Everything happened the way that God said they would. God saw that it was good. God saw that it was good. All of his creation was good. All of it did.

It was designed to do what it did do and what it did do it did do well. Even crazy creatures like the platypus or the the armadillo some of the things that we see in the wild, and we think what in the world is going on there. God loves variety, but it all works well. And so in verses 26 and 27, then God said, Let us make man in our image according to our likeness, so that they will have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. And God created man in His own image.

In the image of God, He created him, male and female, He created them. Created them. And so for the first time, we find God having a discussion with himself. And I remember as a child saying, what does this mean? God said, singular, God, let us make man in our image according to our likeness.

Plural. Sadly, I was given misinformation. But really, let us not forget that our God is trying God. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy spirit. In fact, even though this is the first time that we find such language, there are other times that we see this.

Just as an example in Psalm 110, Psalm 110, Psalm 110. Psalm 110. Psalm 110 and verse 1. Psalm 110 and verse 1, Yahweh says to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I put your enemy as a footstool for your feet." You see, Yahweh says to my Lord, This is the Godhead speaking, plural but singular, similar to what we find in Genesis chapter one. Over in Matthew, or I'm sorry, in John chapter one, John chapter one.

Chapter one, John chapter one, in verse one, in the beginning was the Word, In the beginning was the Logos. The Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men." You see, he was with God, and yet he was God.

And then as we go even further into John's gospel in John chapter eight. John chapter eight. John chapter 8 verse 42. Jesus said to them, If God were your father, you would love me. For I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come of myself, but He sent me." Even though, as we read a while ago there in John 1, that He is God.

In fact, in John 1 and 14 it says, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. And so what we find there in Genesis chapter 1, As God says, let us make man in our image, the image of God. According to our likeness. This is something that is hard for us to wrap our minds around, that though God be one God, yet He is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is the truth that is taught throughout the scripture.

And in fact, in fact, this was not the first time that he had thought about or had considered mankind. It is a beautiful, wonderful thing to think about. And even before the foundation of the world, God had a plan. Over in 2 Timothy chapter 1, 2 Timothy chapter 1, in verse 9, Verse 9. Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus, from when?

All eternity, all eternity. Passages like Revelation chapter 13. Revelation Chapter 13 and verse 8, it says, And all who dwell on the earth will worship Him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the lamb who has been slain. You see, there were a people whose names were written in the Book of Life before the foundation of the world. Chapter 17 and verse 8 of Revelation.

The beast that you saw was and is not is about to come up out of the abyss and go to destruction. Those who dwell on the earth whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will wonder when they see the beast that he was and is not and will come." There was a book of life that was written before the foundation of the world. Then God's elect were written in that book. There was not an emergency meeting called in among the Godhead to determine what should happen when Adam fell. All that was predetermined by his counsel for knowledge.

His election set forth before the foundation of the world. And so when God gives us this in the opening chapter of his word. And he says, let us make man in our image according to our likeness. Understand. He's doing so knowing that man would fall, knowing what was going to happen.

It is a beautiful thing to think about. This is the crowning part of God's creation. God did not need Adam. God does not need you or me. But yet, He created man.

What does it mean that He made Him in the image and likeness of God? There are some who scoff at this idea and say, what in the world is that? God is a spirit, How then can man be made in the image and likeness of God? Well, We must take God at his word. I believe we should take his word literally as much as what we can.

To borrow from the words of the great Baptist scientist Henry Morris, he said there is something about the human body which is uniquely appropriate to God's manifestation of himself. Since God knows all his works from the beginning of the world, Acts 15, 18, he must have designed man's body with this in mind. Accordingly, he designed it not like the animals, but with an erect posture, with an upward gazing countenance, capable of facial expressions, corresponding with emotional feelings, and with a brain and tongue capable of articulate symbolic speech." End quote. So when we think about this There is a mental likeness. God endowed man with intellectual ability, which was and is far superior to that of any animal.

No animal has been able to do what man has been able to do. Notice from the beginning that God communicated with man, gave Adam commandments as well as duties. In verse 28, he told him to be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and every living thing that creeps on the earth." In chapter 2, verses 16 and 17, he says, And Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, From any tree of the garden you may surely eat, but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat from it, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die." He gave him duties even. Verse 15 of chapter 2, Then Yahweh God took the man and set him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. Told him to even name the animals.

Man's intellectual gifts are seen in his ability to design things, to make them, to appreciate beauty, to compose music, paint pictures, to write, to count to large numbers, to do mathematics, to control and use energy for his own benefit. We've got fire, we've got electricity, we've got nuclear power, we've got the ability to organize, to reason, to make decisions, to be self-conscious, to laugh at himself, to think abstractly. No animal can do that. Great civilizations have been built. Explorations have been made.

Not only here in this world, but in other worlds as well. By man, no animal has done this. Yes, there's a mental likeness. There's a moral likeness as well. God created man perfectly.

Even now, on this side of the fall, we still see these things. In every man there exists a need for worship. There's a void, if you will, where even though church attendance is down, religion is still up, isn't it? Only man can commune with God through worship and prayer. There is a consciousness that exists in man but not in animals.

Only man can truly know the difference between right and wrong. Over in 1st Thessalonians chapter 5, There is a likeness found in the elemental constitution of man, 1 Thessalonians 5, verse 23. Thessalonians 5, verse 23. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely, and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. It's important enough that Paul, writing under inspiration of the Spirit, he mentions three parts of man, body, soul, and spirit.

Within the Godhead, There are three parts, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Now I know there are some who try to say that there is no difference between the soul and the spirit. But there's something here in Holy Writ that within the Scripture it does tell us that There is a soul and there is a spirit. In fact, in Hebrews chapter 4, Hebrews chapter 4 and verse 12, For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword and piercing, as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And so according to this text here, the soul and the spirit are indeed divisible.

Back into our text here. God created them in His image. Image of God created he him, male and female created he them. God created male and female from the beginning. We'll get into this more in chapter 2, but this is God's design.

One man, one woman. That's His design from the very beginning. It's not a man and a man. It's not a woman and a woman. There were no he-she's or she-he's in the Garden of Eden.

God said that it was very good, there was no gender confusion that was happening there. It was male and female. He designed them in such a way that they could be obedient to his commandment. When he told them to be fruitful and to fill the earth. Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that creeps on the earth.

This commandment to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, this is a command that he would later repeat to Noah and his family as they came off the ark. This is actually the reverse of God's command that he gave on Mount Sinai when he said, He shall not murder. God is pro-life. It is strange times that we live in when It's unheard of to speak of being fruitful and all of that, but this is the way that God intended it from the very beginning. He intended.

God gave us the family structure, a man, a woman, husband and wife, children from the very beginning. He gave them the command to subdue the earth to take possession of it to use it for their own good And he gave them every green plant for food. God saw all that he had made. Behold, it was very good. Again, there was no death, there was no disease, there was no problems in God's very good creation.

The fall had not happened. We will finish up with the creation week, Lord willing, next week, but notice what he says there in verse 31. God saw all that he made. Behold, it was very good. There was evening, there was morning, the sixth day.

He made sure that we know that it was a literal day and also that it was very good. There were no mistakes, no oopsies, no problems in God's very good creation and we can rejoice in that. And so before I close this out, does anybody have any questions?
